Portishead Town win seventh straight game with 4-0 victory

A first-half double from Jack Thorne put Posset firmly in control before Owen Humphries produced a spectacular long-range strike and debutant Laurent Davis-Wilson added a fourth to complete an excellent afternoon's work in Devon.

It was another hugely encouraging performance from Kye Mountford's side, made all the more impressive by the fact that several members of the squad were battling illness.

Portishead began brightly and needed just 12 minutes to make the breakthrough, with their relentless pressing game proving decisive.

Winning possession high up the pitch, skipper Kyle Egan released Aysa Corrick, who drove purposefully towards the Brixham goal.

The forward showed excellent composure to check back and wrong-foot his defender before, with the goalkeeper rushing out to meet him, calmly squaring for the waiting Thorne to stroke the ball home.

It was a clinical move from Posset and the perfect start to the afternoon.

The visitors continued to threaten and it wasn't long before Thorne had his second.

Mitch Osmond tried his luck from distance, forcing Brixham goalkeeper Harley Wilkinson into a fine save to tip the ball over the crossbar.

Egan delivered the resulting corner, which caused chaos inside the home penalty area.

With Brixham unable to clear their lines, the ball eventually fell to Thorne, who struck a powerful effort towards goal.

A defender stationed on the line could only divert the ball into the net as Portishead doubled their advantage.

Two goals for Thorne and Posset were firmly in command.

The hosts, however, were not about to make life easy.

Brixham adopted a physical and direct approach, regularly looking to get the ball forward quickly and test the Portishead backline.

Matt Britton and Ollie Woodhouse had to be at their commanding best in central defence, repeatedly dealing with aerial deliveries and ensuring the home forwards were given little opportunity to threaten.

Woodhouse was involved in a particularly physical encounter and required treatment midway through the opening half after appearing to catch an elbow, leaving the field temporarily to stem the bleeding.

Hamish Hurst, operating at right-back, also faced a demanding afternoon against the home side's attacking threat, while Aron Robbins provided a solid presence on the opposite flank, defending diligently and looking to support the attack whenever the opportunity arose.

In midfield, Jamie Adams was excellent throughout, combining his usual energy and tenacity with quality in possession as Portishead worked to establish control of the contest.

Further forward, Ethan Feltham epitomised the work rate running through the side.

The striker chased tirelessly, closed down defenders and refused to give the Brixham backline a moment's peace.

Alongside him, Corrick was proving a constant danger.

His intelligent movement, willingness to receive the ball and ability to drive at defenders gave Posset a valuable attacking outlet throughout the afternoon.

Despite the hosts' physical approach, Portishead held firm and took a deserved two-goal advantage into the interval.

With several players feeling under the weather, Mountford was forced to make changes as the second half progressed.

Captain Egan made way at half-time for Owen Humphries, while two-goal hero Thorne was subsequently withdrawn and replaced by new signing Laurent Davis-Wilson, making his Portishead debut.

The changes did little to disrupt Posset's momentum.

There was also a familiar face sporting a rather different look as the sides emerged for the second half.

Having required treatment for a head injury during the opening 45 minutes, Ollie Woodhouse returned to the action with his head heavily bandaged – looking every inch Portishead's very own Terry Butcher.

The uncompromising defender continued to throw himself into the action, epitomising the determination and commitment running through Mountford's side.

Davis-Wilson wasted no time in getting involved, looking lively down the left and offering another attacking threat with his pace and movement.

And in the 62nd minute, the two substitutes combined to produce a moment of real quality.

Davis-Wilson collected a loose ball and laid it into the path of Humphries, who was some 30 yards from goal.

The winger needed no second invitation, unleashing a magnificent dipping strike that flew beyond Wilkinson and into the back of the net.

A stunning goal, and Portishead had their third.

It was another example of the attacking quality available to Mountford, with Humphries making an immediate impact from the bench and Davis-Wilson already looking at home in a Posset shirt.

Osmond, another of those not feeling 100 per cent, was then withdrawn and replaced by Sam Watkins, who was making his second debut for the club having returned to Bristol Road earlier in the week.

Despite their comfortable advantage, Portishead continued to press forward in search of more goals.

Feltham came agonisingly close to getting the reward his tireless performance deserved, rising to meet a corner and sending a powerful header crashing against the crossbar.

The fourth goal eventually arrived, and fittingly it was another of the afternoon's debutants who got his name on the scoresheet.

Humphries delivered a dangerous free-kick from the left touchline and Davis-Wilson was on hand to apply the finishing touch, turning the ball home to cap an excellent introduction to life at Portishead.

Having already provided the assist for Humphries' spectacular strike, the new arrival could now celebrate a debut goal of his own.

With the points safely in the bag, Mountford turned to his bench once more, introducing Callum Eastwood and Rio Fitton to provide fresh legs and energy for the closing stages.

Portishead continued to show the discipline and determination that has underpinned their recent run of results, ensuring there would be no late consolation for the hosts.

It was another impressive afternoon for Posset, who combined clinical finishing with a determined defensive display to secure a thoroughly deserved victory.

Four goals, a clean sheet and a seventh consecutive victory.

Posset's remarkable run continues.

Attention now turns to cup football, with Portishead travelling to Longwell Green on Tuesday night for a Les Phillips Cup tie as they look to carry their winning momentum into another competition.
