Australia will have to put up a sterling fight if they are to save the second Test, after being bowled out for 99 midway through the second session on the fourth day at St George’s Park.
South Africa, with a lead of 326, enforced the follow-on with Kagiso Rabada then dismissing Nic Maddinson for the second time in the match.
Marnus Labuschagne and Travis Head reached tea with their side on 50/1. Australia still trail the Proteas by 276 runs. The only blemish for the South Africans was Marco Jansen dropping Head at gully, when he had five off the bowling of Wiaan Mulder. The ball came at him quickly, but given the match he is having and some of the catches he has taken in that spot, it is chance Jansen was disappointed to miss.

Maddinson, who nicked off to third slip in the first innings against Rabada, scored eight the second time around, but was out in similar fashion, with the outside edge nestling in wicketkeeper Ryan Rickelton’s gloves.
It was the ideal start for the home team, who decided to enforce the follow-on, despite not having Anrich Nortje available. The fast bowler left the field midway through his fourth over in the first session, with the Proteas management later confirming that he was being assessed “for a suspected right groin injury,” and would play no part in the rest of Australia’s first innings.
That will most likely be the case for the remainder of the match.
Marco Jansen claimed a fifth career five wicket haul as Australia’s innings collapsed in an unedifying heap after lunch.
Resuming on 69/6 after lunch, Australia lost Beau Webster, to a thick outside edge, which Aiden Markram did well to hang onto diving to his left from second slip.
Steve Smith became the third Australian to reach 11000 Test runs following Ricky Ponting and Allan Border when he reached 28. But a short while after doing so, his defences were breached by a peach from Mulder, who knocked back the top of the former Australian captain’s off-stump.
Mulder and Rabada cleaned up the rest of the innings, leaving Australia in big trouble. Jansen picked up 5/33, while there were two wickets apiece for Rabada and Mulder.
