"4am starts" – Former Rugby World Cup captain forced into new career after four-year ban
the webb ellis cup rwc 2023

A former Rugby World Cup captain has swapped professional rugby for a very different career after receiving a four-year doping ban.

The former international, who once played in front of packed stadiums, now spends his working days behind the wheel of a truck.

That player is Chris Vui, the former Samoa captain and Bristol Bears forward.

Vui captained Samoa at the 2019 Rugby World Cup in Japan and was a popular figure at Ashton Gate.

However, his career came to an abrupt halt following a positive test for the banned substance nandrolone in September 2023.

He received a four-year suspension, backdated to that month. His appeal to the Court of Arbitration for Sport was unsuccessful.

From World Cup captain to truck driver

Vui has since found work driving lorries in Bristol, with some shifts beginning in the early hours.

It is quite the change for a player who once competed against the world's best.

However, the former international insists he is enjoying life away from the sport.

In a recent Instagram post, Vui wrote:

"My life is good! Really good!"

He added: "Much like Nacho, I've got a mission, a little man to love, and the best job in the world."

The former forward also celebrated fatherhood, declaring: "Fatherhood is the BEEESSSSTTT!"

Vui hints at telling his side of the story

Vui has also suggested that more details about his suspension could emerge soon.

In another Instagram post, he wrote:

"What happens when a world-class athlete, at the peak of his career, tests positive for steroids he's never heard of?"

He ended the message with: "Coming soon..."

The comments suggest Vui is preparing to share his account of the case.

His suspension runs until September 2027, although whether he returns to professional rugby remains unclear.

For now, the former World Cup captain appears happy with his new life and his role as a father.
