A halftime interview usually gives a losing coach one last chance to sound in control, but Aaron Glenn added more lore to his tenure as New York Jets head coach after falling behind by 14 and admitting to kickoff confusion.
Jets fans roasted their second-year coach after he claimed his offense would start the second half with the ball against the Patriots. New England won 26-19 at Gillette Stadium.
The biggest issue with his confident claim was that New England was scheduled to receive the kickoff. NFL viewers questioned whether Glenn truly understood the situation after admitting he made mistakes in his first year last season.
Glenn told sideline reporters the Jets would get the ball after halftime. In reality, New England had the second-half kickoff as the Jets trailed 17-3 and Glenn tried to stay positive.
"The good thing is, we get the ball. We get a chance to move it and finish," he said. New England deferred at the coin toss, so the Patriots always got the ball after the break.
Fans jumped on the mistakes, especially after Drake Maye and his offense torched the Jets. "Lol 2:40 before kickoff he still thought they were getting the ball," one viewer wrote on X.
Another asked whether Glenn had actually said the Jets would get the first, while a third questioned how the organization could justify keeping him.
A fourth fan added, "I HATE Glenn, but he just misspoke." The coach corrected his remarks and said the team needed a turnover before scoring.
Glenn defended himself on Monday and said his offense needed to do something whenever it regained possession.
He insisted he knew the kickoff situation and was just talking about sustaining drives, not who got the ball next.
The Jets backed up Glenn’s words for a moment. The defense forced a punt, then Geno Smith found rookie Omar Cooper Jr. for a 48-yard touchdown. Suddenly it was 17-10.
Maye connected with Romeo Doubs and DeMario Douglas before halftime. The Patriots held off the Jets’ comeback and won 26-19.
Maye finished with 235 yards and three touchdowns. He started a two-game streak without a pick after throwing one in each of the previous four weeks.
The Jets recovered a fumble but stalled in the red zone and settled for a field goal.
Smith threw for 252 yards and a touchdown but threw his first pick of the season in the fourth quarter. The loss dropped New York to 2-4 and improved New England's record to 4-2.
