Middlesbrough's away-day mentality can serve them well and Tommy Conway encapsulates it

Never give up! Maybe Kim Hellberg has introduced a new policy, particularly away from home, which might keep Bolton Wanderers on their toes on Friday night.

Things may not have gone too well at the Riverside, against Cardiff, which was a major disappointment following the terrific all-round display at Stoke.

Yet Hellberg has clearly introduced a new policy which may prove more than useful in the promotion race, particularly away from home.

The away-day innovation was evident when, having suffered the disappointment of conceding the Potters’ second equaliser, Middlesbrough still poured forward in the closing minutes searching for a third goal.

It worked wonders, at a stage of the game when Boro might so easily have buried their frustrations last season by pulling more men back to hang on to what would still have been a useful away point.

The sight of seven or eight men pressing away in the final stages at Stoke was not only a delight to see, but it also brought all three points with Neto Borges’ dramatic match clincher.

Make sure you never miss the latest Middlesbrough news and opinion by making Teesside Live one of your Google preferred sources.

Hellberg deserves the major plaudits for the victory by insisting that his team stayed on the offensive throughout the 90-odd minutes, no matter what.

You expect to see Boro pressing for a late winner in home games, whenever necessary, but it’s not something which usually happens away from home.

The beauty of the policy is that Boro now have enough players to carry it out. With such a large squad, Hellberg has so many options and can make substitutions during the game which can make the team even more effective as far as attacking is concerned.

It will be hoped that Hellberg sticks with this positive approach. Who knows what this fully charged-up Boro team can achieve away from home if they persist in trying to keep the opposition on the back foot until the final whistle, even when they have their tails up.

Head coaches elsewhere in the Championship now know that there will not be a single minute for their own teams to relax.

Bolton head coach Steven Schumacher will surely have watched a video of the Stoke game on several occasions. He will surely be hard pressed to come up with answers.

The fact that Hellberg wants his men to stay on the attack for the full 90 minutes away from home, whatever the circumstances, can produce a massive extra influx of points to aid their promotion push.

Tommy Conway's role in that

It was heart-warming to see Tommy Conway getting back to his best at the weekend, which will have worked wonders for the Scottish international.

The one thing that you can guarantee from Conway is that he will work his socks off in every game, running, harrying, sending over his typical low crosses and looking for a goal or two.

It has taken him some time to physically make a full recovery from his injury. The fact that Kim Hellberg was able to leave him on for the whole 90 minutes against Cardiff tells its own story.

Conway now looks ready made for the job on the left which Hellberg believes is his best role. Ironically, Conway was standing directly in front of goal when he scored his crucial opener against the Welsh side but he’s a huge creative threat on the left. He can create chances for the other forwards in addition to putting the odd one or two away himself.

In being selected in a regular position on the left, Conway is indirectly sending out a challenge to the likes Leo Castledine, Jeremy Sarmiento and several other potential left-siders that he intends to make the position his own.

It was interesting to see Max Arfsten come on as a late substitute and slotted into the right hand side, rather than the left where we all expected to see him.

Boro are certainly well equipped with wide players, particularly on the right where Amario Cozier-Duberry leads the charge.

Amario is a good player who has the ability to out-fox opposition defenders and has scored two good goals this season. However there are times when it would be better if he passed to team- mates in goalscoring positions rather than have a pot at goal himself.

Anyway Bolton will certainly be aware of the threat they face down both flanks on Friday which should help Middlesbrough to stay on the offensive for long periods.
