Ben Roethlisberger pinpoints major flaw in Steelers offense

While the Pittsburgh Steelers secured a victory in overtime against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, former quarterback Ben Roethlisberger identified a major mechanical flaw holding back the offense. Roethlisberger pointed out slow pre-snap play delivery as a main culprit.

Speaking on his podcast, “Footbahlin with Ben Roethlisberger,” the Future Hall of Famer explained how late play-calls create operational chaos, neutralizing Aaron Rodgers’ greatest strength—his ability to manipulate defenses at the line of scrimmage.

When a play arrives late, the quarterback lacks time to diagnose coverages, call audibles, or utilize hard counts. Instead, the offense rushes to get set before the play clock expires.

“If you don't have time, then you're stuck in what you have,” Roethlisberger noted. “And sometimes you can get in a situation where like you you're at the line of scrimmage, you're a little late getting there and it's like, 'Oh man, the play we have called is no good.' And it's like, okay, I gotta I got to hurry and change something. And you start to change it and then it's like, oh shoot, now I'm at like 3 seconds.”

Roethlisberger emphasized that getting to the line with 15 to 20 seconds remaining changes everything for a veteran signal-caller.

“When you're at the line already at 15 minimum, 20, then you feel like you have an eternity. Then you can do it as hard counts. You can do all the stuff you want. Now you're just playing. Now you're having fun.”

The contrast was stark in the fourth quarter when Pittsburgh shifted to an up-tempo pace. By accelerating the tempo, Rodgers gained full control, leading the offense on decisive drives. Rushing the huddle forces predictable execution early in games, but fixing this communication lag will allow Rodgers to operate at maximum efficiency from the opening kickoff.
