Chelsea’s £96m Winger Faces January Decision: How Should Alonso Use Him?
Chelsea

Chelsea Transfer News: Chelsea’s defeat by Tottenham has increased focus on Xabi Alonso’s side. Their four wins, one draw and two defeats have brought 13 points, leaving them fourth. João Pedro leads their league scoring with five goals, but Chelsea have conceded eight times from set-pieces.

Alonso wants his team to press, protect its shape and move quickly through midfield. Those demands leave little room for mistakes, particularly when Chelsea lose possession. Pedro Neto has scored five times and remains a key right-wing option, while Geovany Quenda offers a young alternative. Competition for minutes remains fierce at Stamford Bridge.

That competition helps explain Estêvão Willian’s limited role. The 19-year-old Brazilian has made seven appearances across all competitions in 2026/27, playing just 154 minutes without a goal or assist. His close control and inward runs offer a threat, but Alonso demands disciplined defending when opponents break.

According to TEAMtalk, Via Transfer Feed, Estêvão has grown frustrated with his lack of involvement and was shocked by his shortage of first-team opportunities. He wants to win his place back but could reassess his future before January if his minutes do not improve by year-end. Barcelona and other clubs are reportedly monitoring the situation.

Chelsea insist he remains central to their long-term plans and want to discuss a new contract, despite around seven years remaining on his current deal. TEAMtalk cites an expected transfer value of €110.9m, roughly £96m, which would make a sale costly for suitors. That valuation reflects Chelsea’s desire to protect their investment rather than consider a premature departure.

Chelsea Transfer News: How should Chelsea develop Estêvão without weakening Alonso’s system?

Chelsea should back Alonso’s gradual approach while giving Estêvão a clear route to more minutes. Planned substitute appearances can test his defensive positioning without leaving the right flank exposed during matches. Coaches should focus on tracking runners, closing passing lanes and recovering quickly after turnovers.

Still, development cannot mean leaving an attacker on the bench indefinitely. Chelsea should set targets for his pressing, recovery runs and combinations with the right-back, then reward progress with starts in suitable matches. A new deal may protect the club’s investment, but it will not settle his concerns alone. Estêvão needs a clear development plan and meaningful opportunities, not promises without minutes.
