Glen Johnson delivers bizarre Joao Pedro verdict despite Chelsea star outdoing Erling Haaland

Joao Pedro has been immense this season. While Chelsea’s defence has toiled, Pedro has led Xabi Alonso’s attack and yet, Glen Johnson thinks the Brazilian should be doing more.

Missing the game at Brentford, Pedro has scored five goals in five Premier League games. The Brazil star has won his place back in Carlo Ancelotti’s side, as well as laying on three assists for Alonso’s outfit.

August’s Premier League Player of the Month, Pedro’s importance to Chelsea’s side is growing by the day. So much so, that the Blues have given him a new contract. But Glen Johnson thinks he can do more.

Glen Johnson thinks Joao Pedro should be scoring more goals

Since joining Chelsea from Brighton for £60m, Pedro has scored 28 goals in 59 appearances. In that time, he has also laid on 12 assists for the Blues. But it is under Liam Rosenior where he really started to shine.

Enzo Maresca is infamously known for saying Pedro would never score 20 goals in a season, claiming he is not that type of striker. Yet, under Rosenior and now Alonso, he is proving he is exactly that striker.

At £60m, he seems to be a bit of a bargain!

However, speaking to PariuriX, former Chelsea man Johnson claims Pedro should be scoring more goals: “To say that Joao Pedro is one of the best no.9s in the world would probably be an exaggeration.

“He is certainly a top player. I think you would like more goals from him. But as a player, in the way he combines and creates; very high level. But to be the best of the best, I think you have to really stand out.”

Glen Johnson is wrong, Joao Pedro is outdoing Erling Haaland

Only one player has scored more Premier League goals than Pedro this season, and that is Man City’s Haaland. Coincidentally, Haaland could end up at Chelsea if Man City’s appeal proves unsuccessful.

But Pedro is scoring more goals per minute than Haaland. The Norwegian is averaging a goal every 88 minutes in the League, Pedro just 86. In terms of goal involvements, Pedro is miles better at 54 minutes.

Haaland has not produced an assist yet. It is largely due to Alonso’s change in usage of Pedro, who is now averaging 34 touches between goals, instead of 84 last season. Alonso has changed Pedro into Haaland.
