Pundits agree on 'scary' Liverpool signs as Andoni Iraola plan starts to come together

Andoni Iraola won his first Premier League home game with Liverpool this weekend, with his Reds side starting to come together at both ends of the pitch against Brighton

Since losing 3-0 to Manchester City last month in a game that completely changed after Ryan Gravenberch's red card, Liverpool has won four matches on the spin in all competitions.

Slowly but surely, it does appear that Andoni Iraola's plan is starting to come together, with this weekend's win over Brighton the first time that his trio of £100M-plus forwards gelled as one.

Defensively, Liverpool now looks more solid — helped in no small part by the form of Ronald Araujo — and in front of that, there are enough exciting players to take the chances that it creates.

"Iraola is the type of manager that defends well," Ashley Williams said on BBC Match of the Day.

"He doesn't waste time and try to build up too slowly. If he can go fast, with the pace that he has at the top of the pitch, then he does it.

"Now he has got those players like Bradley Barcola, Cody Gakpo, Florian Wirtz and Alexander Isak. If they are all fit and they are on the pitch, he is not going to waste any time.

"They get the ball forward, they are dynamic, and we know it is difficult to defend against pace — especially pace and willing runners in behind.

"We are seeing signs of an Iraola team, which is scary for the rest of the league as they just creep up."

"You see a real togetherness," fellow pundit Toby Alderweireld added. "Of course, they didn't have the best results — maybe some bad performances — but you see how much better they are getting.

"Togetherness, as a team, that is the most important thing. That's what Liverpool has always been — a team that works hard, with good organization and very dynamic, like they showed today."

Liverpool FC have launched their new home kit for the 2026/27, inspired by iconic adidas strip worn during the club's 1989/90 title-winning campaign.

Not everyone was impressed by Liverpool, however. Brighton boss Fabian Hurzeler appeared to aim a dig at the Reds, hinting that he felt only one team tried to win the game.

"I think everyone in the stadium saw that there was one team who really tried to create and try to win this game and therefore I have to praise my players," Hurzeler said in his post-match press conference.

"I think everyone in the stadium, and you as well, felt there was a missed opportunity for us, because it's not only after the goal or the goals they scored.

"Also, before they scored, we had one or two big chances, and today, I think it was just the difference that they scored and we didn't score."
