Fountain Valley football routs Westminster, closing in on league title
Fountain Valley quarterback Isaac Combs (5), seen against Ocean View on Aug. 21, tallied five total touchdowns in a win against Westminster on Friday.

WESTMINSTER — Mitch Olson doesn’t want to get ahead of things, so he’d rather not entertain the prospect of Fountain Valley’s first and increasingly inevitable league football championship in 18 years.

The Barons sit one victory from a share of the Lambda League title and two from a first outright crown since 1988 after Friday night’s 42-14 romp at Westminster, a victory built primarily on quarterback Isaac Combs and a defense that conceded their hosts little of consequence.

Combs, throwing easily to Raymond Dillon Jr. and Drake Robinson, completed 19 of 23 passes for 233 yards and four touchdowns, ran for 102 yards and another score, and Fountain Valley (5-3, 3-0 in the Lambda League) permitted Westminster (5-3, 1-2) — outside of two successive second-half series and two end-of-game plays — just 27 yards and a single first down most of the evening.

They’ve already beaten Sonora (7-1, 2-1), their chief rival for the title, and finish the league campaign Friday against Valencia (4-4, 0-3) and Oct. 30 against Santa Ana Calvary Chapel (4-4, 1-2), perhaps the two weakest sides in the competition.

“That’s not even in our mind,” said Olson, who won eight league and one CIF Southern Section championship at Kennedy and is in his second season building a culture within a program that had lost 35 successive league games heading into the season. “We’ve got five [Lambda] games. We’ll cross them one off at a time, and then at the end, after the last game, we’ll see what we did.

“Maybe we can pat ourselves on the back then, but until that time comes, we’re just one week at a time, not thinking about anything else.”

Fountain Valley’s last title was the five-way Sunset League share in 2008, when two of the champs — not the Barons — failed to make the playoffs. This one would be the program’s sixth.

“It’s huge for the program, it’s huge for the school, it’s huge for the community,” said Robinson, who caught two Combs balls for scores, ran for another and played a key defensive role. “It’s been a long time since we’ve had a winning culture here, and we’re not trying to win a co-championship. We’re trying to win it all.”

Fountain Valley was dominant throughout and might have scored more but for a couple of fumbles, one inside the Lions’ 15-yard line. It marched to a 6-0 lead on Combs’ 7-yard run on its first possession, boosted the lead to 21-0 by halftime on Combs strikes to Robinson and, most cheekily, Trenton Farr — drawing two rushers toward him, then dumping the ball in the empty flat for the touchdown — then scored on its last three drives.

The big one was a 66-yard bomb to Dillon — he raced behind two defenders, caught the ball in stride at the 28-yard line and cruised into the end zone — on the second play after Westminster, following a takeaway, put together its first scoring drive. Combs connected again with Robinson, who ran for the last touchdown.

Olson wasn’t fully pleased. The fumbles irked him, the Barons went three-and-out on their other non-scoring drive after Combs and Dillon connected on a 9-yard, first-down gain, and the Lions moved the ball too easily while twice trimming their deficits to 28-7 and 35-14.

“Not good,” he said. “Yeah, we played hard, but we made a ton of mistakes. But you know what? They just kept rolling, kept rolling, doing their jobs, and things happen, and you deal with them, you move on.”

Combs twice landed awkwardly and headed to the sideline, for a few plays in the second quarter and the last dozen yards of the final possession. He produced, with his feet or through the air, 274 of Fountain Valley’s 354 yards, 13 first downs and five end-zone entries on the six scoring drives. He pushed his passing yardage this season to 1,716, his total yardage to 2,080, and has accounted for 18 touchdowns.

“He’s a weapon,” Olson said. “And the best thing about him, he’s a great young man, and he’s smart. He’s a sharp guy. He’s at a different level. I’ve coached a long time, but you don’t have many quarterbacks like that. And you have a kid that you trust, and he’s smart, and he makes the right calls.

“He got banged up a couple of times, but he’s fine. He’s a tough kid. He got kind of bent back. I think it scared him a little bit, but he’s all right.”

Dillon made seven catches for 115 yards, his third triple-digit total this season, and Robinson totaled 77 yards, 51 on four receptions.

Sophomore linebacker Braunson Khan, with two sacks, and senior tackle Tanner Barlow led the defense, which gave up just 20 yards and one first down in the first half.

“They’re phenomenal,” Combs said. “All they got to do is get us the ball back, and that’s what they do. They do their job every time, make a lot of stops. So that’s all we can ask for on offense.”

The Barons, he said, are “just trying to change the program here, to show that we can do stuff ... [We’re capable of] a lot. I mean, we’ll see, but I think we can win league, make a huge run in CIF. We’re hoping to go as far as we can.”
