Jameis Winston has plenty of fans in NFL locker rooms. Leonard Fournette and Jarvis Landry still think it’s time for him to take a seat.

Jameis Winston has plenty of fans in NFL locker rooms. Leonard Fournette and Jarvis Landry still think it’s time for him to take a seat.

The “4th and South” hosts backed J.J. McCarthy after his relief appearance gave the New York Giants a chance to salvage an afternoon that had slipped away against the New Orleans Saints. For Landry, the difference was enough to get him sitting upright again.

Leonard Fournette and Jarvis Landry Back J.J. McCarthy

Fournette, a Super Bowl champion with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, delivered the blunt verdict during thepodcast’s quarterback discussion.

“I believe the (Jameis) Winston experience is over with.”

McCarthy nearly helped New York erase a 34–10 fourth-quarter deficit before the Giants fell 34–27. Fournette believed that showing would earn him the next start, while five-time Pro Bowler Landry questioned the gap between Winston’s infectious personality and his production.

“The play and the personality ain’t matching up,” Landry said. “The personality is giving MVP, giving Hall of Fame, and the play is just giving like, backup.”

Winston’s charisma has never been difficult to spot. Landry wanted the quarterback’s performance to give New York the same reason for excitement.

McCarthy’s entrance certainly got his attention.

“I went from slouching back in my seat to, like, sitting up,” Landry said.

Fournette also criticized Winston’s turnovers, although he overstated the total when he referred to three interceptions. Winston threw two against New Orleans. McCarthy threw the Giants’ third interception after entering the game. Winston finished 14 of 26 for 152 yards and one touchdown.

McCarthy’s Mobility Gives Giants Another Option

Landry’s argument went beyond the passing numbers. He highlighted McCarthy’s ability to escape pressure and turn a broken play into a substantial gain.

The scramble he recalled as roughly 30 or 40 yards officially went for 28 on New York’s final drive. That mattered for an offense that managed only 84 rushing yards all afternoon.

“This is why having J.J. McCarthy starting quarterback going forward makes the most sense to me,” Landry said.

McCarthy finished with 243 passing yards, a touchdown and an interception. His appearance also promptedChase Daniel to endorse him as New York’s starter, adding another former player to the growing case for a change.

Winston’s broader performance offers little protection from that debate. Through Week 6, he ranks No. 26 inPFN’s 2026 Quarterback Impact rankings with a 68.4 grade.

John Harbaugh said Monday that the Giants were still working toward a quarterback decision ahead of their trip to Houston. At 3–2–1, New York remains in the division race, giving the choice immediate stakes.

McCarthy’s interception showed why one exciting quarter cannot settle every concern. His response gave Fournette and Landry enough to make their choice. They want to see what happens when he gets the opening drive.
