Prairieville scored two touchdowns in the final minute of the first half, creating all the separation it would need in a 26-7 win at Walker on Friday night.
Prairieville took advantage of a botched punt and an interception to turn a 12-7 lead into a 26-7 halftime advantage. Neither team scored in the second half, which allowed the Hurricanes (3-4, 1-3) to pick up their first District 5-5A win of the season.
"We've been playing pretty well all year," Prairieville coach Mike Schmitt said.. "We lost a couple of (district) games by three points, but they were games we had a chance to win. This week we focused on taking care of the little things. We still had a ton of penalties, but we didn't turn the ball over much, and defensively we really played a great game tonight."
Walker (4-3, 1-3) picked up its score on an 83-yard pass from Jayce Evans to Brashad London. That pulled the Wildcats to within 12-7 midway through the second quarter, but they ended the half with only three first downs. Walker didn't put together a sustained drive until the third quarter.
Walker finished the game with eight first downs and 229 yards of total offense. On a windy night that affected the passing of both teams, Evans completed 3 of 15 passes and was intercepted twice. He was also sacked three times by Prairieville senior Daniel Williams.
Prairieville turned in a big night on the ground with 365 yards rushing. Running back Courtnei Payne ran for 114 yards on just seven carries, and quarterback Skylar Kelly rushed for 103 yards.
Through the air, Kelly was 5 of 17 for 51 yards with no interceptions.
"Offensively, we didn't do a whole lot," Walker coach Chris Harrell said. "We put our defense in some bad situations as far as field position. They were on the field a lot in the first half, but I thought we came out much better in the second half. We had some fourth-down stops, but it just was too late."
In the first half, Walker stayed close and looked to be in good position after it held Prairieville on downs inside the WHS 10. Instead, a botched punt attempt and an interception led to two Hurricanes touchdowns in the last two minutes of the half.
The sequence started when Payne broke free for a 71-yard run. The play gave Prairieville a first-and-goal situation, but the Wildcats held on downs. Walker stalled after picking up one first down, and punter Brodie Marino didn't get off his kick on fourth down.
From there, Prairieville needed only two downs to score on Payne's 8-yard run. After the kickoff, Prairieville got the ball back on Stantyn Delapasse's interception, and it capped off a quick, 49-yard drive on Kelly's 17-yard touchdown pass to Chance Jackson.
Prairieville scored twice in the first quarter. Payne had a 4-yard TD run at the end of the Hurricanes' first possession, and Kale Daigle's 2-yard run made it 12-0.
