Manchester United hit by Eddie Howe compensation bombshell with Newcastle United owed payout

Exclusive: Eddie Howe is on Man United's short-list to take over from Michael Carrick - but things may not be that simple for the Red Devils

Newcastle United fans are poised to see if Manchester United swoop for Eddie Howe in the coming days.

The Magpies did not want Howe to leave back in July when he informed the board of his decision to go but accepted he wanted to quit after five years in charge. Howe is on a two-man shortlist at Man United along with ex-Germany boss Julian Nagelsmann.

If Michael Carrick leaves Howe is said to be open to the job at Old Trafford, but it might not be so straight-forward for the Red Devils. Chronicle Live understands that should Howe head to northern and Premier League rivals Man United, the Old Trafford club would have to cough up compensation to Newcastle.

It is expected that a "signifcant payout" would be due to Newcastle given that Howe had a number of years left to run on his contract.

Howe was on around £6m a year at Newcastle and serving a multi-year deal that was extended in summer 2024. It is a payout that could lead to millions coming the way of Newcastle given United agreed to allow staff members such as Jason Tindall, Stephen Purches and Simon Weatherstone to leave with him, amid rumours of them going back into management with Howe.

Newcastle's statement in August read: "Newcastle United can announce that Eddie Howe has informed the club of his decision to step down as head coach.

"The club has accepted Eddie’s decision and would like to thank him for his extraordinary contribution.

"Also leaving the club are coaches Jason Tindall, Graeme Jones, Stephen Purches and Simon Weatherstone, and head of performance Dan Hodges."

At the time David Hopkinson, Newcastle United’s CEO, said: “Eddie and his staff leave with the deep gratitude and respect of everyone at Newcastle United, and with a lasting place in the club’s history.

“While we are naturally disappointed to see Eddie leave, we remain immensely thankful for everything he has done for the club.

“On behalf of our owners, Board, players, staff and supporters, I would like to extend sincere thanks to Eddie for his outstanding service and leadership, and wish him and his family every success and happiness for the future.”

Ross Wilson, Newcastle United's sporting director, added: "I would like to thank Eddie and his staff for everything they have done for Newcastle United.

"I'm grateful for the support, trust and partnership Eddie has shown throughout our time working together. His dedication to the players, staff and supporters has been evident, and he leaves with the respect and admiration of everyone who has had the privilege of working alongside him.

"I wish Eddie and his family every happiness and success in the future."

Newcastle are believed to be monitoring what happens next with Howe and Man United.
