Bruno Guimaraes hilariously knocking Arsenal out of Carabao Cup is just perfect

Bruno Guimaraes continues to be a peripheral figure at Arsenal, a squad player with the Gunners, as Mikel Arteta rates the likes of defender turned makeshift midfielder Myles Lewis-Skelly ahead of the Brazil international.

The former Newcastle United midfielder was reduced to a bit part player on Saturday, on the bench as usual and only coming on once Arsenal had made the game safe against Everton. Still only two Premier League starts for the Gunners.

Last night against Fleetwood Town in the Carabao Cup it was the same story, Lewis-Skelly and Zubimendi preferred in midfield by Mikel Arteta ahead of Bruno Guimaraes.

The one-time Newcastle United captain and talisman was only introduced with eight minutes to go and the score 1-1.

Bruno Guimaraes still grabbed all the headlines though.

The last 16 Carabao Cup-tie went to penalties, the first spot-kick shoot out for Arsenal since Gabriel hilariously lost them the Champions League final to PSG.

No Gabriel this time but with the first seven penalties all confidently scored, up stepped Bruno Guimaraes.

The same stuttering run up that ended in disaster for Bruno Guimaraes and Brazil in the summer, this time Bruno G doing the same for Arsenal with such a predictable result. A feeble penalty easily saved and when Fleetwood scored their fifth it was all over.

The Fleetwood v Arsenal match highlights below, if you want to go straight to the magical Bruno Guimaraes moment, that is at 11.10.

Arsenal losing to a Fleetwood Town team that are two points off the League Two relegation places that would send them into non-league. Brilliant celebrations for Fleetwood and their fans, the team having now won more Carabao Cup matches (four) this season than their three victories in League Two.

An early 29th birthday present for Bruno Guimaraes, that birthday occurring five days ahead of his first return to St James’ Park to face Newcastle United. Interesting to see if he gets a game…

Last week that return was clearly on his mind as he fears the reaction he will get from United fans, coming out with his sob story about how difficult it was to leave NUFC, the sleepless nights he had…

Bruno Guimaraes was brilliant for Newcastle United but it was his choice to leave, he is no longer one of us, he is one of them. Wearing an Arsenal shirt I will treat him with the same kind of contempt I reserve for the likes of the despicable Havertz and the rest of the Arteta set-up.

With Sandro Tonali already having exited from the Carabao Cup and Anthony Gordon not competing in it obviously, we just need Chelsea to win at Anfield tonight and Newcastle United will have lasted longer in this season’s competition than all of the quartet who did so much to win the 2025 Carabao Cup for Newcastle United but left for cash and hopefully cups elsewhere.

Last night saw the battle of two League One clubs and it was Bradford who overcame Peterborough to claim a place in the last eight.

So when the Carabao Cup quarter-final draw is made tonight, there is more than a 28% chance that the winners of the Everton and Newcastle United will be drawn against either Fleetwood or Bradford for a place in the Carabao Cup semi-finals.

That Carabao Cup quarter-final draw will be made on tonight after the conclusion of the Liverpool v Chelsea game, which is an 8pm kick-off.

An official EFL announcement: ‘The Carabao Cup Quarter-Final draw will take place live on Sky Sports following the conclusion of the Round Four tie between Liverpool and Chelsea on Wednesday, 28 October. Sky Sports presenter Dave Jones will host the draw, alongside former Liverpool player Conor Coady and former Chelsea player Graeme Le Saux. Ball numbers for the draw will be published on EFL channels on Wednesday.’

Tuesday 27 October – Bradford 2 Peterborough 0
Tuesday 27 October – Fleetwood 1 Arsenal 1 (Fleetwood win 5-3 on penalties)
Wednesday 28 October – Man City v Brighton (7.30pm) Sky Sports+
Wednesday 28 October – Sunderland v Brentford (7.45pm) Sky Sports+
Wednesday 28 October – Fulham v Palace (7.45pm) Sky Sports+
Wednesday 28 October – Bournemouth v Villa (7.45pm) Sky Sports+
Wednesday 28 October – Liverpool v Chelsea (8pm) Sky Sports Football and ITV
Thursday 29 October – Everton v Newcastle United (7.45pm) Sky Sports+
