Plans for a new artificial grass pitch in Aberdeen have taken a major step forward following significant investment.

The Hazlehead 3G pitch project has secured £650,000 from The Scottish FA’s Pitching In Fund for 2026/27, alongside a further £200,000 award from sportscotland’s facilities fund, to support the construction of a new high-quality, all-weather pitch.

The project is a partnership between Sport Aberdeen, West End Football Club, Scottish FA, and sportscotland. The investment confirmed for the development reflects a shared ambition to improve access to high-quality, all-weather facilities across Aberdeen.

Mark Pain, Community Sport Manager, Sport Aberdeen, said, “We are delighted to have secured funding towards delivering a facility that will create more opportunities for the local community to be active and involved in football.

“This funding has only been made possible through the close collaboration between all of the partners, and we are very grateful to everyone who has played a part in getting the project to this stage. We look forward to continuing to work together as the project progresses.”

West End Football Club has developed a close working relationship with Sport Aberdeen over recent years through its use of the facilities at Hazlehead and will act as the anchor club for the new pitch.

Murray Burnett, Chairman of West End Football Club, said: “A new 3G pitch at Hazlehead has been something we’ve been working towards for a number of years, so reaching this stage means a great deal for everyone connected with the club. The new facility will provide a significant long-term benefit not only for our members, but for the wider community, while also giving the club reliable access to a high-quality pitch for training and matches throughout the year.”

Graeme Sutherland, Scottish FA North Regional Manager said, “We are delighted to be able to support this project, one we see as a key component in transforming facilities and infrastructure across Aberdeen City.

“Improving existing football and community facilities via our “pitching in” fund is only made possible through collaboration and, on this occasion, work undertaken by local volunteers at West End FC in partnership with Sport Aberdeen and sportscotland has contributed massively to the realisation of this important project.

“We welcome this asset to the football landscape and to continuing with local partners to improve the beautiful game.”

Construction work on the 3G pitch is expected to commence in Q4 2026, with completion anticipated in spring 2027.
