CBS Sports puts 49ers on upset alert against Falcons

The picks are in and the vast majority of NFL experts are predicting that the San Francisco 49ers will defeat the Atlanta Falcons on Sunday afternoon.

That's an understandable trend given where these two teams stand heading into Week 7. The Niners are 6-0 and at the top of pretty much every power rankings list on the planet. Meanwhile, the Falcons have lost two frustrating games in a row at home and have a far-inferior roster on paper.

However, at least one analyst thinks an upset could be in the cards. Tyler Sullivan at CBS Sports sees the Niners as vulnerable thanks to the minor Achilles injury that wide receiver Mike Evans suffered in their Monday night win over the Washington Commanders.

"When Evans is on the field, the 49ers have 0.29 EPA per play compared to a -0.03 EPA per play without him. Translation: That's going from the best offense in the NFL to the 16th-ranked offense in the NFL. That brings San Francisco down much closer to Atlanta's level and makes them a live home dog."

Before this season Evans was long a thorn in the side for the Falcons in the NFC South. In 21 meetings between the Bucs and Atlanta he put up 108 catches, 1,652 yards and 13 touchdowns. Only the Carolina Panthers have gotten it worse from Evans in his career.

Losing Evans would definitely be a blow to the Niners' passing game, especially if Deebo Samuel (hamstring) is also out this week.

However, the 49ers still have two blue chip receiving weapons in tight end George Kittle and running back Christian McCaffrey, who have formed the backbone of Kyle Shanahan's offense more often than not in years past.

Even if Evans is on the sidelines it would be a surprise if the Falcons come out on top.
