Four things we learnt as Newcastle United defeated Crystal Palace

The home side were on top during the first half, having most of the shots out of the two teams and looked as though they were bound to score.

They went into the second half on top; however, they did not carry their skills from the first half into the second half, and were quickly outwitted by William Osula, who opened up the scoring after getting his toe on the end of an inch-perfect Jacob Murphy cross.

The Magpies’ number 11 doubled the lead with a first-time shot at the centre of the box which swiftly flew past the goalkeeper; after that goal the away team sailed through the game and were not really troubled much, and got themselves back onto winning ways.

Newcastle need Lewis Hall

Lewis Hall has been a remarkable player for Newcastle, and he has really progressed under them and has turned him into a player that they cannot drop.

Especially in the previous few games where the performances have not been good, it is him that has been the player that is trying to spark that energy and trying to get the movement going a lot quicker, rather than slowly which is how it has been at the minute.

Against Crystal Palace, he did no different, constantly making positive runs trying to make opportunities and chances; they were not always taken advantage of though, but it is very clear that Hall is a player that is very dangerous going forward and making chances.

Newcastle back on winning ways

The previous few weeks have been really difficult for the Toon Army, having to watch their team lose to teams who they should not really be losing to, and on top of that delivering performances that are nowhere near the level the fans expect them to be performing at.

Their last result against Aston Villa was a very disappointing one; although it was only a 0-1 defeat, the performance was not close enough to the standard they as a club hold themselves to, and the fans were not very happy.

Something had to change going into this week; they had many of their key players back from injuries and available to start, which really made a difference.

Osula started the game and immediately added energy and pace up front, and when Anthony Elanga came on later in the game, he added the same, which has been the Magpies' issue in recent weeks that their plays have been too slow and delayed.

This result should give them the confidence going into their EFL Cup tie at Everton on Wednesday.

Osula is back in action

Osula has been injured for the majority of this new season with a foot injury, which was picked up in the tough opening game against Liverpool, which had left an energetic hole up front.

He made his return against Coventry City but only as a substitute, and although he did add something, it was not enough to bring back that result; it was the same in the Aston Villa game too.

However, this week he was in the starting line-up and got his first Premier League goal of the season, and it will hopefully be the start of scoring for him this season.

At the end of last season, he could not stop scoring, and he would have been hoping to continue that if he was not sidelined by his injury, but this should be the confidence boost needed to continue scoring.

Experience really does matter

Newcastle United has one of the youngest squads in the league this season, and has sparked the question of whether age and experience really matter if you want to be a successful team.

The Magpies have proved that at times, without the experience of an older and longer-serving player, it can be costly when it comes to maintaining stability and consistency.

In this game, Matthias Jaissle started Dan Burn and Fabian Schär in the centre of the defence as opposed to the recent duo of Sven Botman and Malick Thiaw.

Botman is 26 years old, and Thiaw is 25 years old, and this season they have been the two at the heart of the defence due to Burn being injured.

However, the Newcastle manager decided to change things up as a result of the poor run of fixtures and players coming back from injuries, and it turned out to be an amazing decision.

They achieved their first Premier League clean sheet of the season and broke their winless run.

Schär is Newcastle’s longest-serving player, and for many of his seasons he was the starting centre-back and an unchangeable player because of his assertiveness in the back.
