On Saturday evening, the USC football team suffered an embarrassing 24-7 road loss to Wisconsin. This week, however, the Trojans will be back home at the Coliseum to take on Ohio State.
In recent weeks, there had been speculation that ESPN’s “College GameDay” could finally return to Los Angeles for the matchup of college football blue bloods. After USC’s performance in Madison, however, that possibility went out the window, and “GameDay” will instead head to Minnesota-Indiana.
The matchup between the Gophers and the Hoosiers is a rather interesting choice, given that Minnesota is unranked, Indiana is favored by nearly three touchdowns, and ESPN is not even televising the game. This strongly suggests that the show had another game in mind, but had to pivot at the last minute due to an upset.
In other words, USC had an absolutely golden opportunity to finally bring “GameDay” back to the Coliseum for the first time in 13 years—an astonishing streak for one of the premier programs in the sport. However, Lincoln Riley blew it, and instead, the drought will continue.
From 2004 through 2013, the Trojans hosted “GameDay” at least once in all but two years—including twice in 2006. However, due to a combination of down years for the program and ESPN placing an increased emphasis on the SEC, “GameDay” has not returned to the Coliseum since USC upset Stanford in 2013.
Someday, “College GameDay” will finally return to USC. Right now, however, it appears as though that return will be under a different head coach.
