Ferrari told decision to make space for Christian Horner's F1 comeback would be 'crazy'

Formula 1 legend Emerson Fittipaldi has urged Ferrari to remain loyal to Fred Vasseur, insisting Christian Horner would not be the right fit for the team. Horner described the Ferrari job as a 'dream' role during a bombshell interview last month, a year after his departure from Red Bull. The 52-year-old spent 20 years as CEO of the team before being sacked last year, bringing an end to a historic spell that included six Constructors' Championships and eight Drivers' Championships. Vasseur has been under pressure for some time, particularly from the Italian media, which has closely scrutinised Ferrari's struggles throughout the current campaign. Horner's comments have only fuelled further speculation over the Frenchman’s future at the Scuderia.

However, Fittipaldi warned that replacing the Frenchman with Horner would be a mistake. He said: "I know Fred Vasseur well because when I ran the A1 Team Brazil, Fred took care of us; he was my technical leader.

"He is a fantastic guy to work with. He is strong and has a very similar approach to [ex-Ferrari boss] Jean Todt. It would be crazy for Ferrari to get rid of Fred.

"He's a great leader, a racer, and a very tough guy. Christian Horner would not be the right man for Ferrari, I don't think."

Both Charles Leclerc and Lewis Hamilton have thrown their support behind Vasseur, with Leclerc describing the speculation surrounding his future as 'not nice' and 'disrespectful'.

Horner admitted that joining a team could mean a prominent figure having to step aside, while insisting he still hopes to return to F1 and renew his rivalry with Mercedes boss Toto Wolff. "At this stage in my life, there's only one team for which I would accept non-participation in ownership," he said.

"Would I consider Ferrari? I mean, Ferrari is the biggest brand in Formula 1. It's the dream. And arguably it's the sleeping giant of Formula 1. There comes a point in time where a team's competitiveness outweighs other egotistical stuff.

"I'm in a very fortunate position that I can afford to be picky. If I don't do anything, I can live here for whatever time I've got left on the planet, and just worry about whether it's going to rain and make the grass green or not.

"But is that going to fulfil me? No. I still feel that there's another dance. And Toto needs to have his hair f-----g ruffled up."
