On this day: Kemp comes to Proteas’ rescue
Proteas

On this day in 2005, the Proteas were staring down the barrel of defeat against New Zealand before Justin Kemp came to the rescue.

New Zealand posted 249-8 in the first ODI in Bloemfontein, with Craig McMillan scoring 66 off 75 balls. Andre Nel led the Proteas’ bowling attack with 3-42, while Jacques Kallis claimed 2-45.

South Africa slumped to 41-3, with Kallis dismissed for a duck, before slipping to 117-5. Kemp then combined with Mark Boucher (33 off 50 balls) and Shaun Pollock (37 off 29 balls) to revive the chase.

Kemp smashed five fours and three sixes in his 73 off 64 balls before falling with the score on 247. Nicky Boje struck the winning runs as the Proteas secured a two-wicket victory with three balls remaining.

The Proteas went on to claim a 4-0 series victory, with the fourth ODI washed out. Kemp continued to deliver with the bat, striking an unbeaten 30 off 19 balls in the third ODI to help seal the series, and was named Player of the Series.
