Swindon Town's secret weapon to turn poor form around

A 1-1 draw with Walsall at the weekend, in which Drinan netted Town’s goal early on, was an improvement in performance, but it did mean that their run without a win now stretches to six games.

In the last two weeks, Ian Holloway has brought in a sports psychologist, who was with the club at the same time as Richie Wellens, to work with some of the players individually, and also as a group.

Holloway has spoken about the fragile confidence of the group during the difficult run of form, and believes that engaging in “mind training” can help them as much as their work on the pitches at Beversbrook.

Drinan worked with the same psychologist when he was with Wellens at Leyton Orient as they won the League Two title, and he has already noticed the difference in some of his teammates.

He said: “She came in at Leyton Orient when we won the league, and she helped us a lot then.

“She has only been in for one session, but the main thing that she does is get the group as close as possible; she gets everyone understanding each other and helping each other.

“The first session was great; everyone was interacting, everyone was involved, and everyone was expressing how they feel, and all of those little things that help you get to know one another and come closer together.

“As soon as it was mentioned, some of the lads went, ‘I’m not interested in that,’ and it was the same at Orient, but as soon as that first session happened, everyone loved it.

“Everyone walked out with a smile on their face, and it really felt like she helped us a lot.

“It is not just in a team environment, but if anyone needs to go and speak with her about whatever might be going on, then they can do that.

“She turned a couple of lads around at Orient, who I suppose were struggling, and they ended up performing really well.

“I am sure she will be brilliant going forward.”

Holloway got the Swindon squad to stay longer last week in an attempt to create closer bonds within the group.

Where players would normally leave after training, they would put on extra sessions away from the pitch in the afternoons to get them working together.
