Newcastle United given Matthias Jaissle sack verdict with Christmas timeline

Newcastle United cult hero David Ginola has delivered his verdict on the Magpies' start to the season and the future of Matthias Jaissle, who has come under some pressure

David Ginola has called for Newcastle United to give Matthias Jaissle until at least Christmas to see if he can turn the club's fortunes around.

Jaissle, 38, was appointed as the Magpies' new head coach in August following Eddie Howe's shock departure. The German joined after spending three years at Saudi Pro League side Al-Ahli, where he helped them win one Saudi Super Cup and the AFC Champions League twice.

Despite a positive start to life on Tyneside, going unbeaten in his first five matches across all competitions, Jaissle's side have since lost three out of their last four. It's a run that has seen them drop to 11th in the Premier League table, having picked up eight points from a possible 21.

Saturday's 1-0 defeat against Aston Villa has piled the pressure on Jaissle, with some Newcastle fans booing the team off the pitch and calling for the club to sack the ex-Red Bull Salzburg boss. But ex-Magpies midfielder David Ginola believes there is no need to panic and Jaissle deserves until Christmas to turn it around.

Speaking to Chronicle Live, Ginola said: "Like any fan from Newcastle United, I mean, we are disappointed, but they appointed a new manager to replace Eddie Howe. There's no other solution, or you let him work and be patient and wait for things to get better, or you appoint a new manager. I mean, it's as simple as that.

"You know, football these days, it's very, very tricky. A manager coming in at Newcastle United, the expectation is always massive. But on top of that, what is a bit strange for me is to see and to hear the fans boo, they booed the last game against Villa, and it's not often that you see that from the fans. They stick with the team, with the club, and they're so passionate. I'm very concerned about that. That means that the things they see on the football pitch is not really what they expect from the new manager.

"It's been very difficult, you know, because they were just habits with Eddie Howe. And all of a sudden, you have a German manager appointed, and you change entirely everything. A new staff, a new way of thinking football, a new philosophy, new tactics. And on top of that, you lost [Bruno] Guimaraes, [Sandro] Tonali, [Anthony] Gordon, [Kieran] Trippier. I mean, you know, massive key players for the team. It's not easy. Disappointed, but it's a long season."

The manner of Newcastle's recent losses have frustrated supporters. Before the 1-0 defeat at home to Villa on Saturday, they had been beaten 4-1 at Leeds United and Coventry City, either side of a 2-1 win against Hull City. it has caused great concern among the fanbase with some wanting Jaissle out.

When asked about whether Newcastle should stick with Jaissle, Ginola added: "He's always the fault of someone. In that case, he's always someone to blame. Obviously, the decision was made by the board to appoint Jaissle. What can we say about that? If after seven games he had 15 points and was challenging City and Arsenal, everyone would be happy with that. It's not the case.

"I think it's not the time to blame anyone. I think we need to wait until Christmas to see how things go. There are a few important games coming. Get points on board and things will change. That's the problem with football these days. Waiting is not something you're really used to anymore.

"It's about time, it's about pressure, it's about responsibility. Jaissle already has a lot of pressure on his shoulders with his staff. I think you need to let him work at least until Christmas before making any decision. Otherwise, that means that the board made a mistake, everyone made a mistake to appoint him.

"All things change and it's an entirely different season. You're not challenging for anything. You've got to fight for something you were not prepared for."

Newcastle are next in action when they travel to an out-of-form Crystal Palace side on Sunday. With Palace fresh off the back of a 5-0 thumping against rivals Brighton and in Europa League action in midweek, it does feel like the perfect chance for the Magpies to bounce back and return to winning ways.
