  • Cherries win 3-0 to set up Anfield visit in last eight

  • Wearsiders resist Brentford fightback in 3-2 success

Bournemouth continued their impressive run of results by thumping Aston Villa 3-0 to reach the Carabao Cup quarter-finals for the first time in eight seasons, while Sunderland scored three times in 10 minutes at the Stadium of Light to leave Brentford too much to do as the home side won 3-2.

The winger Amine Adli fired home in the seventh minute at the Vitality Stadium to set Marco Rose’s in-form side on course for a fifth consecutive win in all competitions. Lewis Cook, the Cherries captain, added a fortuitous second early in the second period before the striker Álvaro Rodríguez sealed another 3-0 success after similar wins against Milan and Manchester United.

Villa – five-time League Cup winners – were second best for most of a fruitless trip to the south coast as they endured a first defeat in eight games. Taylor Harwood-Bellis and the substitutes Alejandro Garnacho and Alysson had the visitors’ best chances in Dorset but Bournemouth registered a fifth clean sheet in a row to ease into the last eight.

Both sides made wholesale changes for the fourth-round tie. Adli – one of eight players brought in by Rose, the Bournemouth head coach, finished a fine team move to open the scoring.

After James Tavernier unlocked the visitors’ defence with a delightful ball over the top, the full-back Julio Soler delivered a lofted cross from the left, allowing the Morocco international Adli to fire into the top-right corner from six yards out.

Villa’s unfamiliar lineup struggled to create in the opening stages and only a smart stop from the goalkeeper Marco Bizot prevented Ben Gannon-Doak extending Bournemouth’s lead.

George Hemmings flashed wide as Unai Emery’s team eventually threatened before the 17-year-old striker Brian Madjo was denied by a smothering save from the home goalkeeper Michele Di Gregorio.

Bournemouth doubled their lead six minutes into the second half. Villa initially survived when Bizot superbly tipped on to the crossbar and behind to thwart the Cherries right-back Juanlu at the end of a marauding run.

However, Cook took the resulting left-wing corner short and, after receiving the ball back from Gannon-Doak, caught out Bizet with a low in-swinging cross which crept in at the near post.

The Villa midfielder João Gomes saw an opportunity to halve the deficit saved by Di Gregorio, while the defender Harwood-Bellis went close with a header.

Hopes of a comeback ended in the 69th minute when Rodríguez burst into the penalty box and lashed his second goal of the season into the bottom-right corner after Tyler Adams intercepted a loose pass.

Garnacho was denied a consolation by Di Gregorio after racing clear before his fellow replacement Alysson headed a golden chance wide as Bournemouth’s defence held out to make it a hat-trick of 3-0 wins. They now travel to Liverpool in the quarter-finals.

Sunderland held on to beat Brentford 3-2, with Chemsdine Talbi, Timur Tutierov and Malick Fofana on target – and the winger Jocelin Ta Bi had a hand in all three goals for Régis Le Bris’s much-changed team.

Callum Wilson pulled one back within three minutes, tapping in off the bar from four yards out, after Vitaly Janelt’s scuffed shot had fallen to him.

Igor Thiago set up a thrilling finish when the goalkeeper Melker Ellborg failed to deal with his header in the fourth minute of five added on at the end of the contest. However, the Black Cats held on to book a place in the last eight of the competition for the first time in five years – when they were a League One team.

Brentford started strongly and after the visiting captain, Nathan Collins, directed a free header into the arms of Ellborg, Malick Diouf’s cross was turned into the side-netting by Thiago. Jannik Schuster’s header shortly after crashed against the bar before the rebound saw Michael Kayode direct an effort against the foot of the post.

Ellborg also made a stunning flying save to turn Mamadou Sangaré’s volley over the bar, before Sunderland made them pay for those wasted chances.

Although Thiago went close to levelling, Ta Bi brilliantly created the second at the other end by beating his man and putting a chance on a plate for Tutierov to convert.

With six minutes remaining of the first half, the excellent Ta Bi crossed to the back post for Fofana to head into the roof of the net and make it 3-0.

Brentford responded quickly. Three minutes before the break Wilson pulled a goal back and the striker went close to adding a second before the half-time whistle. After the restart, Janelt’s long-range effort brushed the side-netting and Dango Ouattara headed wide at the far post as Brentford looked to close the gap further.

Although Thiago’s header from Mathias Jensen’s delivery eventually squirmed under Ellborg to give Sunderland a late scare, there was to be no equaliser, and the hosts next travel to Crystal Palace.
