George MacIntyre was fuming after referees disallowed three touchdowns during Tennessee's Saturday loss to South Carolina.
Week 8 of the 2026 college football season delivered plenty of excitement, with Texas securing an impressive victory following consecutive losses by defeating No. 7 Ole Miss, as quarterback Arch Manning left ESPN interviewer Holly Rowe cringing.
A compelling clash between Tennessee and South Carolina at Williams-Brice Stadium, overshadowed by post-game controversy, also took center stage. Going into the SEC showdown, the Volunteers sat at No. 11 nationally, fresh off their victory against Alabama the previous week. But the Gamecocks proved problematic for Tennessee.
South Carolina tallied 10 points in the closing quarter, capped by a game-winning field goal from kicker Malik Orsan, as the Gamecocks prevailed 27-24 over their conference opponents.
The outcome could have been drastically different, though, had referees not nullified three Tennessee touchdowns throughout the contest, leaving MacIntyre livid. ESPN cameras captured the Tennessee quarterback venting his frustration, saying, "They throw a flag every touchdown," clearly exasperated by the officiating crew's calls.
The opening touchdown reversal occurred in the second quarter when MacIntyre delivered a 35-yard strike to receiver DaSaan Brame. Officials negated that score due to an illegal shift penalty on Braylon Staley.
During the third quarter, MacIntyre connected with Mike Matthews for a 48-yard scoring strike, but the play was negated after officials penalized Tyreek King for an illegal man downfield violation. The third score was erased due to a holding infraction called on tackle David Sanders Jr.
After the final whistle, supporters, much like MacIntyre, expressed their anger across social media platforms, claiming referee David Smith, who suited up for Alabama during the late 1980s, showed favoritism against the Volunteers.
"Every single Tennessee game officiated by this dude goes this way. Not a coincidence that he played qb at Bama at all," wrote one fan on X.
A second said: "Someone higher up needs to make a full blown complaint against DAVID SMITH..the ex Bama qtrbk turned ref."
A third said: "Head ref was David Smith - former University of Alabama QB. How do they allow a former player to officiate in their conference."
Nevertheless, numerous observers highlighted that Tennessee's fourth-quarter tactical decisions, including a questionable 4th-and-1 gamble the Volunteers failed to convert while ahead 24-17, were the real reason for their loss.
"That's one of the worst play calls given the moment, situation and magnitude I've ever seen," wrote one fan after the 4th-and-1 play call.
The loss will result in Tennessee sliding down the College Football Rankings, with the squad scheduled to face Kentucky on Nov. 7 after the team's bye week.
