In a devastating early-season blow, the Minnesota Timberwolves have learned that they will be without superstar Anthony Edwards until likely after Christmas. He’ll be undergoing knee surgery and will be out two months.
Shams Charania reports that Ant will undergo an arthroscopic procedure on his knee.
He’s the second superstar on Tuesday to go down for a lengthy period with a knee condition. Earlier, Kawhi Leonard was deemed out for multiple weeks for the Toronto Raptors due to left knee inflammation. And it follows the devastating news for the Oklahoma City Thunder on Monday that they will be without both Jalen Williams and Cason Wallace for likely the rest of the season.
Somebody, please turn off the injury tap in the NBA.
As for Edwards, his absence will be tough for the T-Wolves to deal with. He came out of the chute on fire, averaging 33 points per game through Minnesota’s first four contests of the season. He was shooting threes at a 40% clip with a career-high volume of 11 attempts per game.
But according to beat writer Jon Krawczynski of The Athletic, they hope this procedure now will help them avoid a season-long issue.
“The Timberwolves look at Anthony Edwards surgery as a way to get it addressed as soon as possible, and the hope is he’ll be back sometime in December or so and be fully ready to go, per source,” wrote Krawczynski.
In his absence, Ayo Dosunmu and Terrence Shannon Jr. should see more minutes and usage, while starters Jaden McDaniels and Jonathan Kuminga will be counted on even more to provide offense.
The Timberwolves have started the season 3-1. They’ll now have to go approximately 25 games without their four-time All-Star shooting guard. For what it’s worth, they went 12-9 without him in the 21 games he missed last season.
