San Francisco quarterback Brock Purdy continued his stunning start to the season by guiding the 49ers to a 23-17 Week 6 win over the Washington Commanders. Purdy completed 21 of 29 passes for 264 yards and 1 touchdown in the win that preserved the 49ers’ unbeaten start to the season (6-0) and solidified them as the leading Super Bowl contenders.
After the game, analyst Colin Cowherd lavished praise on Purdy and compared his dynamic with coach Kyle Shanahan in San Francisco to a legendary NFL duo.
During Tuesday’s segment of “The Herd” podcast, Cowherd likened the current Purdy-Shanahan dynamic to that of New England Patriots legends Bill Belichick and Tom Brady.
“Now, who are we comparing Brock Purdy to? The best quarterbacks in the league. Purdy now is directing this offense,” Cowherd said. “This is not just about Shanahan. This is about Purdy. It feels to me very Brady-Belichick. The first couple of years, Belichick did carry Tom. And then all of a sudden, end of year three, year four, Tom broke through, Tom rose above it.”
“There was a time when Brock Purdy, in the first couple of years, he was a product of the environment. But now the niners are a product of his talent and processing. Kid makes good decisions, period, end of story. He is now driving the bus.”
After the win against the Commanders, Purdy matched Brady as the only two quarterbacks ever to start a season 6-0, amassing 15-plus total touchdowns and two or fewer turnovers. The Patriots icon accomplished the feat in 2015.
The former Iowa State Cyclones quarterback also became the highest-rated passer in league history (105.6) with at least 1,500 pass attempts. Purdy has had a meteoric rise after being the 2022 NFL Draft’s ‘Mr. Irrelevant,’ much like Brady when he was selected No. 199 in the 2000 NFL Draft and went on to win seven Super Bowl titles.
Purdy started his NFL career in San Francisco as the 49ers’ third-string quarterback behind Trey Lance and Jimmy Garoppolo, and yet Shanahan believed he was the team’s best QB after just a week in training camp. Purdy climbed the depth chart due to injuries to Lance and Garoppolo and finished his rookie season as the team’s starter, never looking back.
He became the lowest-drafted QB ever to start a Super Bowl during the 49ers’ Super Bowl 58 overtime loss to the Kansas City Chiefs. Purdy signed a lucrative five-year, $265 million contract extension with the 49ers last season to seal his place as one of the league’s elite quarterbacks.
This season, Purdy has registered 1,460 passing yards on 69.6% completion, 14 touchdowns and 2 interceptions, adding 156 rushing yards and 1 score, earning the league’s best rank in PFN’s NFL QB Impact grade of 90.8.
Purdy is also among the favorites to win this season’s NFL MVP Award, alongside Buffalo Bills quarterback Josh Allen.
