The Sarnians failed to make the most of some good chances and missed a penalty when the scores were 2-0 that would have got them back into the game.
‘I’ll have to watch it back and see where we didn’t connect today in possession,’ said Gauvain.
Her side are yet to register a home win this season.
‘I think we’ve been better. I don’t know what it is about games at home at the moment, but we just seem to struggle a little bit. But we’re just going to keep going with the next one, next week,’ she said.
‘We’ve got some tired legs out there as well. It’s been a quick start for them, there’s been a lot of games but we just were not quite connecting today.’
Despite the result, Gauvain praised her midfield three for their efforts up against a very good Stoneham side.
‘I think our midfield three worked extremely hard against some really good technical players in midfield for Stoneham.
‘They were moving the ball around quick but they stuck at their task.
‘They were on their case as much as they could and it’s not surprising that their legs were tired at the end. I think having Amy [Dallamore], Donna [Gallienne] and Candice [Bougourd] in midfield, their energy and work rate is underrated sometimes and I don’t think they get the recognition they deserve.’
GFC Women are back in action this weekend when they travel to face AFC Varsity.
GFC Women failed to make the most of some good chances against AFC Stoneham, who came out on top in Sunday’s Southern Region Women’s League Division One South clash.
The Green Lionesses had some good openings early on with prolific striker Calleigh Hedley among those who tested the Stoneham goalkeeper Jade Collins. In the eighth minute she was narrowly off target, and within another five minutes she had broken through again and fired a shot which Collins got a hand to and deflected it wide.
Up the other end Chloe Marshall and Lucy Bicknell forced Emma Queripel into some good saves.
Stoneham took the lead 27 minutes in through Molly Pinnick, whose lob from 30 yards out dropped in over Queripel.
In the 35th minute Hedley curled a shot towards the top corner, but Collins was there to claw it away.
Minutes later Stoneham doubled their lead through Marshall who got around Queripel to slot home.
The Green Lions were given an instant opportunity to get back in the game after a cross from Hedley was blocked by the arm of an Stoneham player, but the resulting spot-kick taken by Guernsey captain Candice Bougourd hit the post.
Just before half-time Hedley forced Collins into another good save with a shot from distance.
Minutes into the second-half Stoneham made it 3-0 with substitute Eleanor Fitzgerald slotting in a third.
Queripel made some good saves to stop Stoneham extending their lead, with some of the best chances falling to Marshall, who also dragged a shot wide.
Guernsey had some good chances late on but could not find that finishing touch. Eryn James blazed one over the bar for the home side, and a good shot from Amy Dallamore from the edge of the area was just wide.
After Sunday’s match Guernsey FC now sit 10th in the Southern Region Women’s Football League Division One South with four points in six games. So far the Green Lionesses have only beaten bottom-of-the-table Bursledon who they beat 10-2 away from home earlier this month.
