Sheikh Jassim prepares €10 billion bid to buy club

Sheikh Jassim bin Hamad Al Thani has emerged in another extraordinary takeover story, three years after his failed attempt to buy Manchester United.

The Qatari banker became a popular figure among sections of the United fanbase in 2023. His proposal promised a complete takeover, removing the Glazer family from Old Trafford.

He also pledged to clear the club’s debts and invest heavily in its squad, stadium and training facilities.

However, negotiations collapsed in October 2023 after Sheikh Jassim failed to reach an agreement with the Glazers.

Sir Jim Ratcliffe eventually won the takeover battle. INEOS completed its minority investment in February 2024 and assumed control of football operations.

Yet the Glazers retained majority ownership, leaving many supporters furious.

Since then, Ratcliffe has faced growing criticism over cost-cutting measures, ticketing controversies and United’s continued struggles.

The club’s financial problems have added to those concerns. United face substantial debts while pursuing plans for a new stadium costing approximately £2 billion.

Meanwhile, performances have offered little encouragement.

Michael Carrick has overseen just two victories in United’s opening 11 competitive matches this season. Wednesday’s humiliating 4-1 Champions League defeat against Como extended their winless run to seven games.

Supporters have repeatedly protested against the ownership. Before September’s Manchester derby, demonstrators gathered outside Old Trafford to condemn the Glazers and INEOS.

Now, Sheikh Jassim has attracted attention over another potentially enormous takeover.

Sheikh Jassim linked with €10 billion takeover

According to SportSport.ba, Sheikh Jassim has been linked with a staggering €10 billion bid to acquire Barcelona.

The Bosnian outlet cites speculation from Spanish media and social media suggesting the former United bidder could target the Catalan giants.

Barcelona boast one of football’s largest global followings. Their history includes legendary figures such as Lionel Messi, Xavi and Andres Iniesta.

However, the club’s ownership structure presents a major obstacle.

Unlike United, Barcelona belong to their members, known as socios. Any complete takeover would therefore require significant legal and structural changes.

The Spanish giants have also endured financial difficulties, including debts and restrictions on registering new players.

A €10 billion investment would transform their financial outlook, although no official offer or negotiations have been confirmed.

For United supporters who once dreamed of his arrival, another takeover story brings fresh attention to the deal that never happened.
