Reaction from Spalding United manager Jimmy Dean after their draw with Alvechurch in the FA Cup

Manager Jimmy Dean had double cause for frustration after his Spalding United side were held to a home draw in their FA Cup clash on Saturday.

The Tulips boss was disappointed with how his side saw a two-goal lead slip from their grasp in the final stages of their fourth qualifying round clash with Alvechurch.

Dean was also perplexed by the decision of referee Thomas Hales to award the visitors an injury-time spot kick after goalkeeper Peter Crook was penalised for a foul as he punched a cross clear.

He said: "I was frustrated that we let a two-goal lead slip and gave them opportunities to have the territory with 10 minutes to go.

"I'm also really frustrated with the referee because he hasn't had his best day. We've got a player who is going to need stitches in his foot and he said there was no contact.

"I don't know anyone else who would have given the penalty when there is contact between the keeper, the ball and the man when he's come to punch it.

"We have to look at ourselves as well because we could have been a lot more comfortable and their first goal, from our perspective, is a soft one to give away."

The Tulips had taken a first half lead through Dan Jarvis with Alvechurch hitting the crossbar and post with efforts from Ben Stephens and Miracle Okafor.

Jarvis doubled the lead just past the hour mark before Okafor reduced the arrears with seven minutes remaining ahead of his injury-time equaliser from the penalty spot which earned the Southern League Premier Division Central side a replay on Tuesday night.

Dean added: "I can't take anything away from Alvechurch because they played really well and probably edged it in the first half in terms of chances.

"There wasn't too much in it though because we also had our moments. There were times when we did show our quality and broke their press with two or three passes to get out at them but we wasn't always clinical.

"Our most dominant period of the game was at 2-0 up but we reacted really poorly to their goal."

The draw for the first round proper on Monday takes place at 6.35pm and will be made live on TNT Sports.
