Denver Broncos kicker Wil Lutz has played hero before, and he did so again on Thursday night, with a 53-yard field goal to beat the Seattle Seahawks17-14 in overtime. Lutz threw off his helmet in celebration, before shushing the raucous crowd at Empower Field at Mile High.
Lutz was asked about the unusual celebration by 9News reporter Scotty Gange in the locker room after the game.
"A lot of emotion in this game," Lutz said. "It's no secret, it's been a tough start personally, not as a team. We show up every day, we work, we try to figure out what's going on, and at the end of the day it's one kick at a time."
Lutz's kicking has been a talking point through the early portion of the season, as he missed a 42-yard field goal against the Los Angeles Chargers in Week 5, and a 58-yard field goal in Week 4 against the San Francisco 49ers.
By making the 53-yard game-winner on Thursday night, Lutz has now made 22 game-winning field goals in his career, which is good for the most in the league since he entered the league as an undrafted free agent in 2016.
Lutz's longtime coach in New Orleans and now with Denver, Sean Payton, gave Lutz credit after the game in his postgame remarks.
"[I’m] happy for Lutz," Payton said. "He really hit that last kick, and it’s a good team we beat.”
Lutz didn't have the words to describe his emotions during the kick.
"It's hard to really explain the emotional side of it, the good and the bad," Lutz said. "Like I said, I think anybody in my position, anybody on this team, lives for those moments. Glad we were able to put it through."
Lutz took to Twitter/X on Friday to note that Denver has the "greatest home field advantage in sports."
Up next for Lutz and the Broncos is a road game against the Arizona Cardinals on Sunday, Oct. 25, in Week 7. After having gone through the gauntlet of the first six games of the season, Denver will look to get back on their feet offensively and score more points to help their outstanding defense out.
