MotoGP’s escalating crackdown on promotional event attendance is sparking fears among fans that Marc Marquez could be edged out of the championship fight, potentially forced into early retirement akin to Casey Stoner. The controversy ignited after Marquez skipped the go-kart race prior to the Japanese Grand Prix at Motegi, an event replacing the traditional riders’ parade, citing ongoing physiotherapy on his heavily operated right arm.

Marquez’s cautious management of his physical condition—necessitated by seven surgeries since 2019—is central to his strategy this season. The Ducati rider has even adopted unconventional methods such as doing press-ups on the grid before races to stimulate blood flow in his arm and shoulder, all to avoid exacerbating his injury while maintaining competitiveness against title rival Jorge Martin. However, his absence from the karting event reportedly displeased MotoGP officials, who are now considering imposing hefty fines and even sporting sanctions on riders who miss mandatory promotional activities.

Sources indicate that MotoGP plans to enforce a €5,000 (£4,200) fine for each missed promotional event, with penalties escalating if absences accumulate. More alarmingly, rumours circulating in the paddock suggest that Marquez could face grid penalties—a severe competitive handicap—if he refuses to comply, a move that has enraged many in the fanbase. Simon Patterson of The Race has highlighted that MotoGP is not ruling out these sporting sanctions, signaling a crackdown that could directly impact the championship standings.

The reaction among followers of the sport has been fierce and vocal. Many fear that these measures are designed to marginalize Marquez, preventing him from clinching another title. One reader bluntly warned, “They are going to push him out like Stoner,” referencing the Australian’s premature exit from MotoGP. Another accused the series of “anything to keep Marquez from winning another title,” while a third lamented, “They’re just too scared of Marc being the champ again.”

Criticism extends beyond just Marquez’s predicament, as fans decry MotoGP’s increasingly authoritarian approach. Comments on social media describe the fines and potential grid penalties as “ridiculous” and “out of control.” One user provocatively suggested, “All riders should refuse to suit up,” questioning the direction of the sport under current management. Another urged riders to challenge the authority of Dorna Sports, MotoGP’s commercial rights holder, demanding an end to controversial rules on tyre pressure, track limits, and promotional obligations, arguing that “the teams pay for the party, and the riders are the stars of the party.”

These tensions are especially charged with the championship battle razor-thin. Jorge Martin leads the standings with 355 points heading into the Australian Grand Prix at Phillip Island, just two points ahead of Marquez’s Ducati. Marco Bezzecchi remains in contention in third with 309 points. The looming threat of off-track penalties threatens to overshadow the fierce on-track rivalry, prompting a fan to warn, “Ridiculous! We really don’t want to end up like F1. The title should be decided on the track, not in the boardroom.”

As MotoGP contemplates harsher disciplinary measures for promotional absences, the sport risks alienating its marquee star and fracturing its passionate fanbase—raising urgent questions about the balance between commercial interests and sporting integrity.
