David Bailey’s promising rookie season could face a setback.
He is dealing with a groin injury and did not practice Wednesday.
Bailey finished the Jets’ 28-25 loss to the Dolphins on Sunday but felt “lingering” discomfort on Monday.
“Seeing how the week goes,” head coach Aaron Glenn said about Bailey’s status for their Week 8 game against the Raiders on Sunday at MetLife Stadium.
Bailey, whom the Jets drafted with the No. 2-overall pick, has been a rare bright spot in another otherwise dreary season.
He has recorded 5 ½ sacks, nine quarterback hits, three forced fumbles and seven tackles for loss across his first seven games in the NFL. He broke out with three sacks during the team’s Week 5 win over the Browns, earning him a Rookie of the Week honor.
It’s part of a larger injury uncertainty on the defensive line.
T’Vondre Sweat (knee) also did not practice Wednesday. Neither did Joseph Ossai, who missed the last two weeks with an ankle injury. Both Sweat and Ossai are considered week to week, Glenn said.
Max Mitchell (concussion) also did not practice Wednesday. Demario Davis and Harrison Phillips were given veteran rest days.
Breece Hall, who missed the past four games with a quad injury, was a limited participant, as were Braelon Allen (ankle) and Dylan Parham (knee).
Geno Smith, at least publicly, isn’t treating a matchup against his former Raiders team any differently.
Smith spent last year with the Raiders, where he went 2-13 as the starting quarterback.
“It’s another game,” Smith said. “It’s another opportunity for us as a team to go out there and try and start a streak, try to establish ourselves. We want to preach improvement every single week. Going up against, obviously, a team that I played on, I don’t really put too much stock into it. I just think it’s another game and that’s the way we need to approach it. That’s the way I approach every game. It’s the most important game because it’s the next one.”
