Manchester United are currently squaring off with Leeds United in the Premier League, knowing a victory is imperative to course-correct their campaign.
Pressure has been building on Michael Carrick, as he has only managed to guide the Red Devils to two victories from their opening nine fixtures, across all competitions prior to this game with the Yorkshire club.
Man United equalled an unwanted record coming into this clash with Leeds, which will worry fans and all those at the club. However, a loss in this game will further worsen this record.
At halftime against Leeds, Man United are winning 1-0 in a game which is incredibly important for Carrick and the club despite being so early in the season.
Pressure has been growing on Carrick after the club’s poor start to the campaign across all competitions, and there has been talk that Como could be his last game, should he not get a result at Elland Road or in that Champions League clash.
Fans and pundits will point to the work he did last season in getting them to the Champions League by finishing third in the Premier League, but a failure to recruit thoroughly in the summer is being seen as a major issue, with Lisandro Martinez indicating it was a failure of the club hierarchy following United’s loss to Atletico Madrid midweek.
However, people may be able to point the finger at the World Cup winner and his defensive colleagues for equalling an unwanted club record, one that has stood for 94 years.
For a second consecutive season, the Red Devils have no clean sheets in their first six games, the first time they’ve done so in back-to-back campaigns since 1930-31 and 1931-32.
Now, there will be a concern if they were to fail to keep another clean sheet, as it would mean they have failed to do so across their opening seven league games.
Carrick will be desperate to see an improvement in the side’s rearguard action, as clean sheets guarantee at least a point in any football match.
The Lilywhites are looking to make history against Man United, in what has been a one-sided rivalry for the majority of the last 50 years.
Leeds have not beaten the Red Devils at home in the Premier League since 2002, the same year is the last time they last entered this clash ahead of Man United in the division, with this being the case in 2026.
Daniel Farke’s side can secure consecutive wins over Man United for the first time in 54 years, with this last happening in the 1971-72 campaign. The Red Devils would finish eighth in that campaign, while Leeds claimed second place under Don Revie, as Brian Clough guided Derby County to the title.
Should Leeds secure all three points, firstly, fans will go home happy they got one over their old rivals, while it could indicate that the Lilywhites are slowly building into a side that can challenge for domestic silverware again, as they did under Revie. As it must be noted, Leeds won the FA Cup in 1972, the season they beat Leeds twice in the First Division.
However, as they trail at halftime they know they have it all to do in the second half to achieve this momentous feat for Farke's side.
