Guiseley extend winning run to six with FA Trophy victory

The Lions secured a place in today's second-round draw after Cam Wilson scored twice and Will Longbotom converted a late penalty.

Guiseley will now travel to Hebburn Town on Saturday, November 14, for a 3pm kick-off in the next round.

Wilson opened the scoring with the first chance of the afternoon. He moved into the area and finished between goalkeeper Luke Pilling’s legs, scoring in consecutive matches.

The game was played in heavy rain and strong winds, making it difficult for both teams to keep the ball on the ground.

Warrington almost equalised 10 minutes later when Harrison Wood struck towards goal. Guiseley goalkeeper Jack Hall pushed the shot over the bar with one hand.

Jordan Thewlis, celebrating his birthday, then went close to scoring. He forced Pilling to make a save with his legs after receiving the ball in the area.

Thewlis had already assisted Wilson’s opener and nearly created a second goal before half-time. His cross found Jack Emmett, but the forward headed wide with nine minutes of the first half remaining.

Seconds later, Thewlis saw Pilling away from his goal and attempted to lift the ball over him. The wind held up the effort and stopped it from travelling the full distance.

Rylands had the first opportunity after the break when Dean Furman sent a low shot wide under pressure from Hall.

Guiseley doubled its lead 12 minutes into the second half. Thewlis delivered a low cross into the area, where Wilson arrived to slide the ball home from close range.

The visitors continued to create the better chances. Emmett shot from 20 yards, but his effort went narrowly wide.

That began a busy spell. A minute later, Wood’s cross was cleared by Hall.

Another minute after that, substitute Noah Wadsworth reached a similar position at the other end, but Pilling came off his line to deny him.

Guiseley came close to a third with 27 minutes remaining. Harrison Hopper’s cross found Kallan Murphy, who reached the ball before Pilling and headed towards goal. The effort struck the centre of the bar.

Charlie Staniland was then given space outside the area and chose to shoot. His effort was blocked and went out for a corner, which the home defence dealt with.

Warrington reduced the deficit in the 76th minute. Wood’s low cross reached George Waring in the centre of the box, a yard from goal, and he slid the ball in.

Two minutes later, Guiseley substitute Frankie Sinfield took a free-kick. Pilling moved across his line and held the ball on the wet surface.

Longbotom restored Guiseley’s two-goal advantage four minutes from time. He sent the goalkeeper the wrong way from the penalty spot to settle the tie.

It was Longbotom’s first goal of the season following his recent recovery from injury.

The penalty was awarded after Patrick Gamble stopped Emmett’s shot with his hands while down on the floor. He did not receive a card for the incident.

That was the final chance of the afternoon. The teams played five minutes of extra time as rain and strong winds continued at the Cheshire ground.

Guiseley manager Ian Richards will now prepare for the West Riding County Cup. His side travels to Marley Stadium on Tuesday night to face Steeton in the first round.

The match is scheduled to begin at 7.45pm.
