Massimiliano Allegri’s outburst after Napoli’s draw against Roma has made the headlines, as he referred to last season with AC Milan.
Milan collapsed from being in a Scudetto race going into the final third of the season to missing out on a top four spot. Some wounds remain from that, especially given that Allegri was dismissed not even 24 hours after the final game of the campaign.
La Gazzetta dello Sport recall the events of last night, when Napoli and Roma played out a thrilling 3-3 draw. It 2-0 at the start of the second half for the home side, then 2-2 within four minutes. When McTominay made it 3-2 in the 83rd minute, it almost seemed like it was a done deal for Napoli,.
Yet, Balerdi’s header to make it 3-3 – with Beukema inexplicably on the ground after a very subtle contact with an opponent – became a source of ire. Allegri was sent off and couldn’t understand why.
The coach then provided the following outburst: “Last season they put the Champions League in Roma’s pocket. It’s always them… I paid for it with Milan.”
The reference is to the fact Milan were stunned on the final day of the season, losing at home to Cagliari at San Siro to drop out of the top four for the first time since round four. It was a costly defeat for Milan, who were leapfrogged by Como and Roma.
With five games remaining, Max boasted an eight-point lead over Gasperini’s team before suffering a sensational comeback that ultimately cost him his job.
