Omar Cooper Jr. returned from an ankle injury with a breakout performance, earning praise from Jets QB Geno Smith.
Another week.. Another frustrating New York Jets loss... This one was a 26-19 defeat at the hands of the New England Patriots. Plenty of frustrating questions have been asked in the aftermath, but one encouraging development deserved more attention. Omar Cooper Jr. returned from a four-week absence and immediately gave the offense a spark, catching six passes for 103 yards and his first NFL touchdown
Cooper suffered a high-ankle sprain in Week 1's win vs. the Tennessee Titans, leading to his four-week stay on the Jets' injured reserve. His first TD reception couldn't have been more fantastic. This one came off the arm of Geno Smith on a 48-yard connection. It was an encouraging reintroduction to the offense.
Cooper was understandably glad to be back playing rather than watching from the sideline. His performance made the return even sweeter, particularly as he showed he could contribute immediately despite the time away. He spoke with the media post-game, stating the following.
"It was a great feeling. It felt good to finally be able to be back out there."
Smith saw more than a productive box score. The Jets quarterback, while speaking with the media, praised Cooper's ability to handle difficult receptions and make challenging plays look routine, a quality that could prove valuable as the offense looks for more dependable contributors.
"What he did is showcase who he is. He's a playmaker. He finds ways to make catches, the tough catches... he makes them look easy,"
The defeat overshadowed an important individual milestone, but Cooper's return offered New York a reason for optimism. His performance suggests he can give Smith another legitimate option in the passing game, and building on that connection could become one of the Jets' more encouraging developments as the season continues.
