New Zealand National Cricket Team star all-rounder Glenn Phillips has lost his cool after being questioned about his team’s fielding mistakes in the first T20I against India in Christchurch. Glenn Phillips challenged the claim that New Zealand had dropped four catches.

Phillips argued that some chances should not be counted as dropped catches at all when he was asked about New Zealand’s fielding errors during India’s successful chase of a massive target. Earlier, India bowlers created an unwanted record against New Zealand in 1st T20I.

Dropped catches cost New Zealand as India pull off massive 226-run chase

New Zealand National Cricket Team missed several chances as India National Cricket Team went on to chase down massive 225-run target with two balls to spare and four wickets in hand in the five-match T20I series opener at Hagley Oval in Christchurch on Thursday (October 22).

Mitchell Santner failed to hold on to a difficult opportunity offered by Axar Patel in the 13th over, while Matt Henry could not complete a tough return catch off the same batter in the 14th over.

Finn Allen then dropped Shreyas Iyer, and Lockie Ferguson failed to hold on to a difficult outside edge from Naman Dhir, which raced away for a boundary.

Glenn Phillips loses his cool after question on New Zealand’s 4 dropped catches

However, Glenn Phillips, who is known for his electric fielding, refused to accept all four incidents as dropped catches. He argued that Ferguson barely touched the ball and that the other difficult chances should not automatically be included in the count.

He stressed that proper fielding statistics must be based on clear catching opportunities rather than every missed attempt. Amid this, Ishan Kishan's injury opens door for Vaibhav Sooryavanshi's comeback to India XI vs New Zealand.

Phillips said after the match, as quoted by News18, "I mean, drop catches happen. Four? Which ones? Lockie? You’re counting two that no one got their hands on? Oh, yeah, so you guys are counting those? One from Mitch and one from Finn, so not really the other two; you’ve got to get your hands on the ball to catch it.”

Glenn Phillips fires back over Nathan Smith’s boundary catch attempt

The discussion became even more heated when Nathan Smith’s effort near the boundary was brought up. At 16.2 overs, Smith nearly pulled off a stunning catch to dismiss Dhir, but his momentum carried him over the boundary rope with the ball, resulting in a six.

Phillips questioned why such an effort should be treated as a dropped catch. He bluntly said, “Nathan at the boundary line? One that went for six? Wow.”

Glenn Phillips turns the tables on India after heated dropped catch debate

New Zealand has further challenged the reporter to look at India’s fielding before questioning his team’s performance on the field in Christchurch. He insisted that catches can be missed in cricket, but the number of dropped chances must be counted correctly.

Phillips signed off by saying, “How many catches did you guys drop? Okay, so you guys want to start talking field, then you’ve got to count the proper catches. Catches happen, and dropped catches happen, but we need to be counting them properly, okay? You’ve got to get your hands on some of them.”
