Luther Burden’s Breakout Was Only Half the Story

Luther Burden III caught four passes for 130 yards and a touchdown against the New England Patriots. Every one of those catches came before halftime. He wasn’t targeted once in the second half of the Bears’ 30–24 win.

That split could make his night look like two separate stories: a receiver who took over early, then disappeared. Ben Johnson saw something more useful on the film. Burden gave Chicago its spark, Colston Loveland took a larger role after halftime, and Rome Odunze made the catches that helped close out the game. Burden’s first half showed how quickly he can change a score. The rest of the night showed why defenses cannot focus on him alone.

Burden gave Chicago exactly the start it needed

A Bears coach had challenged Burden to “be the engine,” the receiver told the Chicago Tribune. On Thursday, Chicago put the ball in his hands on its first offensive play. Burden turned Caleb Williams’ pass into a 26-yard gain, helping set up a field goal.

His next catch went for 58 yards. Burden crossed the field, turned upfield and reached the Patriots’ 4-yard line with help from a downfield block by Odunze. D’Andre Swift scored soon after to give the Bears a 10–0 lead. Burden added a 22-yard reception, then took a short pass 24 yards for a touchdown late in the second quarter.

The four gains — 26, 58, 22 and 24 yards — accounted for all 130 of his receiving yards. It was the second-highest receiving total of Burden’s two-year career.

The touchdown showed both his talent and the work around him. Kalif Raymond and Loveland handled defenders near the screen, and linemen arrived to help Burden through the opening. Johnson said after reviewing the play that Chicago had seen New England’s corners attack similar screens on film. The blocking kept them from stopping this one before Burden could accelerate.

The quiet second half has context

Burden’s lack of a second-half target is worth noticing. There is no need to invent a reason for it. The Bears found other ways to move the ball, and Johnson has described that distribution as part of his vision for the offense.

Loveland finished with seven catches for 69 yards and a touchdown. Odunze had four for 69 yards, including three 21-yard receptions during crucial fourth-quarter possessions. Williams finished with 308 passing yards and two touchdowns as Chicago improved to 5–2.

A receiver capable of producing 130 yards in a half would understandably want the ball again. For the Bears, the encouraging part is that Burden’s early production did not have to sustain the offense by itself. His 58-yard gain helped create Swift’s touchdown; his own score stretched the lead before halftime. When Chicago needed someone else later, Williams had options.

Burden has benefited from that same shared effort. Odunze blocked on his long catch, while Raymond and Loveland helped spring his touchdown. Those contributions may be easy to miss beside Burden’s stat line, but they were essential to two of his biggest plays.

Johnson sees another dimension to unlock

The most interesting part of Burden’s breakout may be what Johnson says the Bears have yet to show. The coach praised Burden’s work after the catch, then pointed to his speed and his improving detail on intermediate routes. Chicago hit Burden on deep throws at times last season, Johnson said, but has not tapped into that part of his game in the same way this year.

That gives the offense a worthwhile challenge. Burden can turn a short throw into a touchdown when teammates create space. He can also make a defense account for his speed farther downfield. More variety would make it harder for opponents to anticipate how Chicago intends to get him the ball, while giving Williams another route to an explosive play.

Burden leads the Bears with 491 receiving yards through seven games. He has 225 of them in the two games since Williams returned from injury. Thursday was already evidence of how dangerous their connection can be. Johnson’s comments suggest the Bears are still working out how much more they can ask of it.

Four catches made Burden the story of the first half against New England. The next step is finding new ways for him to shape an entire game.
