Glasgow have secured the future of a second Scotland lock in as many days after agreeing a contract extension with Alex Craig until at least the summer of 2029.

The 29-year-old former Gloucester second-row arrived at Scotstoun in the summer of 2025 after a two-year spell with Welsh side Scarlets.

After an injury-delayed start, Craig featured in 16 games for Warriors last season and also won his first Scotland cap since November 2024 – his seventh overall – as a replacement in their final Six Nations game against Ireland.

But a torn foot tendon ended his season in late March, ruling him out of Scotland’s opening block of Nations Championship games in July.

Now restored to full fitness, Craig returned to competitive action last Saturday, playing 52 minutes of Glasgow’s opening Champions Cup win at Sale and scoring his first try for the club to put himself in contention for a place in Gregor Townsend’s squad for their November fixtures against New Zealand, Australia and Japan at Murrayfield.

The Dumfries-born lock will remain at Scotstoun for at least two more years beyond the end of this season, joining fellow Scotland lock Alex Samuel in committing his future to Warriors.

“I’m absolutely delighted,” said Craig, who had a 99.1% tackle completion rate last season, better than any player in major club competitions with over 100 tackles.

“It was a really easy decision to be honest – I loved my first season with the club, and I’m really excited to see what we can achieve as a group. We’re building well together at Scotstoun and I feel like we’re in a great place.

“I definitely felt like I took some time to find my feet in my first year here, but everyone at the club has made it such a welcoming environment to come in and be part of. I’ve really settled in well and I’m looking forward to kicking on over the next few years.

“It was great to get back on the field on Saturday, and even better to get over for the try – I don’t score many! There was a lot of hard work from the team before I got the ball over the line, so I’ll take it but the credit definitely has to be shared around.

“I just want to play as well as I can in a Glasgow Warriors shirt each and every time I’m selected by the coaches. It’s a team that I’ve supported ever since I was a young lad growing up, so it means a lot to me to have the honour of representing the club and its supporters. I’d obviously love to keep pushing for Scotland honours as well, but the first job is to give my all for Glasgow and put myself in as strong a position as possible.”

Warriors head coach Franco Smith said Craig “has dedicated himself to becoming the best version of himself that he can be, both on and off the field” since he arrived at Scotstoun.

“He is someone for whom being a Glasgow Warrior means a great deal, both to him personally and to his family, and you can see that each time he takes to the field,” Smith added.

“He plays an important role for us both with his carrying and his defensive expertise, and we are pleased that he will be staying at Scotstoun for the next couple of seasons.”
