Chelsea made some significant sales in the last transfer window, with the likes of Enzo Fernandez, Andrey Santos and Marc Cucurella all leaving the club in big-money deals.
Fernandez left on deadline day, joining Manchester City for £125m. The midfielder is now Chelsea’s record sale.
Pedro Neto was also linked to City and could have been another big sale at Stamford Bridge. However, no bids were made in the end.
If people close to Neto had their way in the summer, the winger would not be at Chelsea right now. According to The Standard, they wanted Neto to move clubs before the transfer window shut.
There was a lot of interest in Neto. As well as City, Arsenal, Liverpool and Tottenham Hotspur were also thought to have been keen on the 26-year-old.
Chelsea, though, priced him out of a transfer. It was widely reported that Chelsea slapped a £100m price tag on Neto, which no one was willing to pay.
Xabi Alonso will have no complaints. Neto has been one of the Blues’ best players this season and is thriving in his manager’s 3-4-2-1 formation.
Over the weekend, Neto scored twice in Chelsea’s 2-0 win against Everton at the Hill Dickinson Stadium, firing his side to all three points. Alonso will now be hoping for more of the same when Chelsea take on their fierce rivals Tottenham Hotspur this Saturday.
Neto’s brace against Everton means he has now scored four goals in all competitions this term. Three of those goals have come in the Premier League.
Neto has also provided one assist in the seven league games he has played so far. According to WhoScored, the £54m Portugal international completes 1.4 dribbles per match, which is the third-highest average in Chelsea’s squad.
He makes 1.6 key passes per game, putting him in the top five at Chelsea. Going forward, like Cole Palmer and Morgan Rogers, Neto has been a creative outlet for Chelsea.
