AFC Bournemouth are taking their first steps into European competition this season. A sixth-place finish in last season’s Premier League campaign secured qualification for the UEFA Europa League for the very first time in the club’s history.
Last month, just under 2,000 supporters got to experience what football on the continent is like, as the Cherries opened their European campaign with a 2-1 victory over Spanish side Real Sociedad.
On Thursday night, Dean Court got to host its first European night, welcoming Austrian Bundesliga side Sturm Graz to the south coast of England.
In the stands, it was an emotional affair for the Dean Court faithful, celebrating everything that had come before it. The decades in the lower leagues, the Winter Gardens, Wembley, Millennium Stadium, administration, -10 points and relegation, -17 points and the greatest escape. The rapid rise up the divisions under Eddie Howe…the club tapped into this emotion with a pulling-on-the-heartstrings video, a continental-style tifo, fireworks and flames. This was not a Paint Pot tie against Shrewsbury. This was European football against a side that had graced the UEFA Champions League in recent history.
On the pitch, there was pragmatism from AFC Bournemouth head coach Marco Rose. It could have been so easy to play the occasion, but instead, Rose made decisions to rotate his squad following the 5-1 tonking at Chelsea just a few days ago.
Sturm Graz defended deep, got 11 men behind the ball and were hard to break down, until a wonder goal from Evanilson broke the deadlock. The Cherries took a well-deserved lead into the half-time interval.
AFC Bournemouth saw a different Sturm Graz at the start of the second half as they chased their way back into the game, a stunning strike rebounding off the post before a reaction save from Petrovic kept the lead intact.
With the return of Justin Kluivert and Amine Adli to the squad, the Cherries had some well-needed strength in depth to introduce from the bench, whilst Rayan also made an appearance to freshen up the attack, and it was the latter who pounced on a loose ball from a poor clearance to power home the Cherries second beyond the visiting ‘keeper.
In stoppage time, Alvaro put the Cherry on top of the European cake by dispatching a late penalty to round off the perfect night for AFC Bournemouth.

Marco Rose reflects on this evening's win against Sturm Graz 🗣️ pic.twitter.com/qmO12Nu6nB
Speaking to TNT Sport, as quoted by Sky Sports, AFC Bournemouth head coach Marco Rose said…
“…Performance wise, clean sheet, attitude, effort. A deserved win and now we have to continue and get consistent in this kind of thing. Sunderland is the next challenge.
“I believe in this team and I know we are always confident, despite being in a difficult situation [in the Premier League]. Even today, we changed some players.
“We could see that the squad is working, that everyone is keen to play, that everyone deserves to play and it’s good for us for the next few weeks to have a competitive squad.
“Today, we won 3-0 and it’s a really good result after a good performance, but we have to prove it [consistency].

I don’t think it’s been said yet, but huge kudos to the club for the pre-match build-up, one of the best I’ve been to and the flags and Tifo plus the corners for the first time, oh and European football me as that goes down in the history books for me, for memories. Well done.

What a special evening for us Cherries fans.
Flags waving all around the ground before the game and, to cap it all, an impressive tifo of our -17 points to European football.
Then we won 3-0 in front of the biggest crowd since the new stadium opened.
Found this stat on the BBC:
After beating Real Sociedad in their opening tie last month, the win against the Austrian side means Bournemouth are the first English club since Bolton in 2005 to win their first two European matches.

Yeah, incredible night, and the players worked so hard to get the result… how classy is Evanilson?
BGD tormented their defenders, but his final ball needs some work. He will improve with age IMO.
Thought Soler looked comfortable, but tired towards the end; good game for him though, and he is still so young!
Diakite is dependable and a good option for Rose on that performance.
Alvaro?…lacks some instinct, but he battled his hardest and will have learned from the experience; hopefully one of those who will come through. It was good of Justin to hand him the ball for the penalty, which he only just managed to squeeze in!
Only slight downside for me was Toth not getting some minutes?
Bournemouth midfielder Lewis Cook says the 'special' pre-match atmosphere contributed to their emphatic win over Sturm Graz 🍒#AFCB won their second successive Europa League match, and their first at Vitality Stadium

I think I’ve run out of superlatives for last night. For anyone who says we can’t create an atmosphere at Dean Court, give your heads a wobble- that was just extraordinary- never been in a better atmosphere at least pre-match anywhere, at any ground, and that includes finals and THAT game v. Bolton. And a decent performance too- not brilliant for the full 90, but for someone who was at Stamford Bridge that was like nectar. And can I just say- went up into the NW corner when first got into the ground just to look at the views- very good, and at the top there must have been 15/16 wheelchair spaces- really, really good and at last some of our wheelchair using fans can come up from row A if they want to. Thank you, Bill, thank you Andoni and the lads for getting us here, and thank you, Marco and the lads for picking up the baton and carrying us on. Things’ll get better still- I’m sure of it. Onwards and upwards, from a very proud and pretty emotional fan today
From minus 17 to European dreams 🤩

Sorry if this thread isn’t the place for it, but it feels as good as any. I’ve grown as cynical about the PL, dodgy money in the game and all of that as anyone, but last night I revelled in the moment. I’ve been going for far less than many of you (a mere 33 years), but last night I could stop thinking about the memories that got me there.
From ‘Pulis Out’ sit-ins, to Blyth Spartans, Roger Boli to Frank Demouge, Chukki’s Gonna Get Ya to the New Stand toilets, Hot Radio to Peter Phillips’ hat, Savi to ‘if you don’t like it, support that lot up the road’, Mo Berthe to Max Demin’s wife’s team talk, tears away at Carlisle to tears at home to Bolton.
Beautiful.

Smith, Gannon-Doak and Evanilson probably the best players on the pitch.
Rodriguez looks a massive work in progress. Needs Fletch to teach him how to be a centre forward. Big lad who doesn’t put himself about and pulls out of too many challenges.
We got the job done, wobbly period early second half aside. Lots of improvement to come, hopefully.

Goosebumps pre-match
Pleasure to watch the match.
Great evening.
And fair play to the Graz fans. Never stopped, and never really seemed to react to the game – no booing of the ref, no “for effs sake” when we scored, no period of quiet mourning when whoever their scapegoat player is misplaced a pass. They just carried on singing, dancing and waving. 10/10, they can come back anytime.

The morning after…
I’m still emotional tbf, don’t think it’s an exaggeration to say that last night is right up there with the best experiences of my life.
It’s funny looking back; the rows around me were full of a mixture of excited kids and blokes from mid 30’s to mid-50s, blinking back tears and trying not to make eye contact with anyone haha.
Also, as a parent, some of you know about my son’s struggles with learning difficulties and mental health. That atmosphere last night brought him out of his shell; it’s a rare occasion that I see him let go & enjoy the moment, but last night did it. This morning he said it was one of the best experiences in his 13 years.
