Liverpool face a huge Premier League clash with Arsenal this weekend, but Andoni Iraola has confirmed a potential huge injury concern ahead of the game.
The Reds picked up one of their most significant victories of the season on Sunday afternoon, beating a hugely in-form Brighton outfit 2-0 at Anfield.
For Iraola, it was another big step in the right direction, with Liverpool winning four matches in a row, and he was understandably in good spirits afterwards:
“Very happy. Very happy for today, very happy overall for these four wins. I think we had today a very good opposition in front, similar to Villarreal the other day – teams that technically are really good. It’s difficult to defend them a lot of times. I think today the key was how we started.
“We needed a stronger start, be aggressive, recover the ball, win our duels, be dangerous in transitions. I think we’ve done it and it has been a different game from the last ones, where we’ve conceded first and after you need a comeback. Today, I think we’ve started better and the game has gone differently.”
The one concern surrounded an injury to Florian Wirtz, however, who went off with an ankle injury in the second half, having again produced a good performance.
While the issue doesn’t appear to be serious, Irala has admitted he could be a doubt for Wednesday’s EFL Cup meeting with Chelsea at Anfield, and possibly at home to Arsenal in the league on Sunday:
“Unfortunately, he had to leave the pitch with a small twist of the ankle. It doesn’t look very big but we are playing every three days so we need to see where he is.”
Wirtz’s improved form in recent weeks has coincided with Liverpool’s good run of results, with the German picking up one goal and two assists in his last three appearances.
Not having the German available against Arsenal this weekend would be such a big blow for the Reds, with Iraola’s side knowing victory at Anfield would put them just three points behind the champions.
Dominik Szoboszlai isn’t yet fit, and even if he is later in the week, it is hard to see him being at his best for the visit of the Gunners, so Liverpool will be desperately hoping Wirtz’s problem is a very short-term one.
It feels pointless risking him for the Chelsea game, even though it is important in its own right, instead keeping the 23-year-old wrapped in cotton wool for the weekend action.
