Saturday was a busy day at 1265 Lombardi Avenue, as the Green Bay Packers made six roster moves ahead of Sunday night’s contest with the Dallas Cowboys.
The most positive news was that wide receiver Savion Williams has been activated from injured reserve, putting him back on the 53-man roster and potentially in the mix to play a role against Dallas. Williams has been limited in practice all week as he ramps up his return from an ankle injury which landed him on IR to start the season. He is questionable for Sunday’s game.
After a fairly anonymous rookie year, Williams impressed at training camp with some splash plays and there was plenty of optimism he could have an increased role in Year 2. The injury set him back, but with Jayden Reed out for the year and Skyy Moore also hurt (more on him in a moment), the opportunity is certainly there.
On the negative side of the ledger, Green Bay placed three players on injured reserve, including Moore with what is reportedly a high-ankle sprain. The other players were Javon Hargrave, who will miss the rest of the year after tearing his Achilles tendon, and Jonathan Ford due to a calf injury.
Injuries at defensive tackle have left the Packers fairly thin at the position. No defensive tackles were elevated for Sunday’s game, meaning they will roll with only four players: Devonte Wyatt, Karl Brooks, Chris McClellan and Anthony Campbell.
The latter two players are unproven, with only 154 defensive snaps in the NFL between them. Help could be on the way though, as Jordon Riley is back at practice after his own Achilles tendon tear. He is doubtful to play on Sunday but could be back on the field in the coming weeks.
The final two transactions from Saturday were practice squad elevations for the Cowboys game, as edge rusher Arron Mosby and wide receiver Coleman Owen were both brought up to the active roster for "Sunday Night Football."
If Williams is not able to play, the Packers would only have had four healthy wide receivers on the active roster in Christian Watson, Matthew Golden, Bo Melton and J. Michael Sturdivant. Whether the elevation of Coleman is bad news for Williams’ availability remains to be seen.
There was one notable transaction which did not take place, and that was the elevation of a cornerback to the active roster. Brandon Cisse was added to the injury report on Friday with a hip issue, while Benjamin St-Juste has already been ruled out with a hamstring.
If Cisse could not go, the Packers would essentially have to elevate someone, as otherwise they would enter the game with only Keisean Nixon, Carrington Valentine and Kamal Hadden as boundary corner options.
The fact there was no elevation at corner likely means Cisse’s injury will not keep him out of the game against Dallas.
