Lindsey says York City's Accrington draw was 'fair result'

York were perhaps fortunate to come away with a point from their 1-1 draw with Accrington, after an 89th minute header from Ollie Pearce cancelled out Josh Woods’ earlier opener.

Playing in an October drizzle, Lindsey admitted that tiredness showed in his City side after a long trip down to Newport County on Saturday, feeling as if it had asked a lot of his players.

He accepted the point though, despite the Minstermen ‘not being their normal selves’ under the LNER Community Stadium lights.

“It was probably a fair result on reflection,” Lindsey admitted.

“We weren’t great tonight, we huffed and puffed a little bit but didn’t create enough chances all night.

“We probably edged it, in terms of chances, but we weren’t our normal selves I feel.

“Even though I made three changes from Saturday, I felt we still had Saturday’s game still in our legs a little bit.

“We put a lot of a shift in on Saturday for that game and I felt we looked a little bit tired tonight, we weren’t our sharp selves.

“They are a good side, they run, like I said in the pre-match press, and you could see that tonight.

“I felt that they ran a little bit harder than we did, but my players have given me everything since I’ve been here.

“Tonight was one of those nights, we were a little bit off of it tonight.

“What we did show was character tonight to keep going, we kept going, kept going and got our goal in the end.”

City had the bigger of the two chances in an uneventful first-half when Pearce was denied one-on-one by Louie Moulden, but it was Accrington who struck first.

A Stefan Mols free-kick was directed home by the head of Woods, meaning York’s unwanted defensive record from set-pieces continued.

It’s a problem Lindsey is desperate to solve, saying: “The set-piece for their goal, we’ve got to be better, we’ve got to do better.

“If we tidy that part of our game up, we’re probably sitting top of the league.

“We’ve conceded too many from set-pieces and we do a lot of work on it, so we’ve got to make sure we’re better at that.

“If they wasn’t very good at it last year, what makes it a quick fix?

“We’re not going to fix it overnight, it’s going to take time.

“We do a lot of work on it and it will take time to get our mentality right, in order for us to be willing to head the ball out of the box.

“When we have a corner, it’s really difficult because the opposition always make it difficult for us to score.

“We’ve got to get better at it for sure, and it will take time.

“It’s not going to be something overnight.”

City looked to respond to the setback in the second-half and Lindsey never doubted that the equaliser would come.

He added: “I felt that we created quite a bit in that second-half, probably a little bit more than we did in the first-half.

“We’d get a goal, I always thought that and I said to Gary [Elphick, coach] with 10 minutes to go that I felt we would score.

“When we scored, we wanted to go and get a second to win the game, but it wasn’t to be.”

That leveller came with just one minute of normal time still to play, when Pearce glanced Arthur Read’s flick on past a helpless Moulden.

It was a carbon copy goal of the late equaliser Pearce scored against Northampton Town two weekends ago, but for Lindsey, it was also a sign of something York didn’t do enough of in the 90.

“We talk about it quite a lot, about movement in the box,” he assessed, “I think it was Arthur Read that flicked it on, it’s a good ball in, I think it was [Harry] Boyes out on that side of the pitch.

“He crossed it, Arthur Read flicks it on and then Pearcey is always in that danger area to go and put it in the net.

“A great goal, we wanted more of that.

“We wanted more crosses going in, I don’t think we peppered their box nowhere near enough, certainly in the first-half but we did do it miles better in the second-half.

“The way we finished the game was probably the way I wanted to start the game.

“We’ll look at it, debrief it, get down to the training ground on Thursday and get ready for another big one again on Saturday.”
