Drew Brees had a front-row seat on Sunday as his old team tried to climb out of a 1-4 hole. This time, he watched from the FOX booth. The New Orleans Saints beat the New York Giants 34-27 at MetLife Stadium in Week 6 to improve to 2-4, and fans praised the analyst on the call along the way.
The Saints’ all-time passing leader is in his first full NFL season as a FOX Sports game analyst. Sunday, he joined his former team’s game after owner Gayle Benson called the start to the season “unacceptable.”
In an impromptu live interview, Brees broke down how Tyler Shough had to manage while playing through a left hand injury.
FOX 8 sports anchor and reporter Madeline Adams shared the clip before kickoff, crediting Brees with “great insight and perspective.”
During the game, an account named “Hold The Mayo,” a Saints podcaster, offered histake on Brees’ broadcasting career: “Drew Brees on the same path he was on during his playing career, in his commentating career. NBC told him he wasn’t good enough, and now he’s cooking with Fox.”
Brees’ time at NBC came in 2021. After retiring as a player, he covered Notre Dame games and appeared on “Football Night in America”, then left after one year. Brees has also called Christmas Day and international games for Netflix and joined FOX’s pregame shows in 2025.
He signed a multi-year contract with FOX that November and now works with play-by-play announcer Adam Amin and sideline reporter Kristina Pink.
“His knowledge is starting to show through in his commentary. I’m loving it,” one fan wrote, applauding Brees’ work.
That comment matches the goal Brees set when his FOX deal was announced: “I hope my passion for this game is reflected in the knowledge and insights I provide to the fans each Sunday.”
Another fan, replying after the final whistle, wrote, “He was great today, super insightful.”
New Orleans fell behind 10-0 in the second quarter before scoring 34 straight points. Daniel Carlson’s 58-yard field goal started the run. A Giants fumble moments later set up Shough’s 2-yard touchdown pass to Bryce Lance with one second left in the half, and Alvin Kamara, Shough and Chris Olave all scored touchdowns after the break.
One fan offered a theory about that turnaround, writing, “I think the Saints coaches are listening to what Brees is saying and adjusting in real time.”
One more fan said Brees “went to work and is now so good in the booth. Watch out MNF!”
However, not everyone rooting for New York liked the man calling it. One viewer complained that Giants fans had to “endure a pro-Saints broadcast.”
Brees did praise the other sideline. He said on the broadcast that McCarthy had played better than anyone could have expected or hoped for. McCarthy had an 82.4 PFN QB Impact Grade in Week 6, the second-highest mark behind C.J. Stroud’s 82.7.
Addressing Benson’s message, Brees also said on the broadcast that the Saints know they need to play much better. Whether his old team lives up to that is the question the rest of its season has to answer.
