ESPN analyst Monica McNutt has revisited the Taylor Swift hot-mic controversy that sparked backlash during the New York Knicks’ historic NBA Finals run last season.
Speaking on The Pivot with Ryan Clark, McNutt explained why she viewed the remark as an offhand comment, discussed the reaction from Swift’s fans, and reflected on Jalen Brunson’s unexpected show of support.
The controversy began during Game 4 of the NBA Finals between the Knicks and San Antonio Spurs on June 10. As Swift watched courtside at Madison Square Garden alongside friends, McNutt, working as the Knicks’ radio analyst, questioned the singer’s loyalty to New York.
“Is that Taylor Swift down there? She’s not a Knicks fan. Get out of here, girl,” McNutt said in a hot-mic moment that quickly spread online.
Swift’s supporters pushed back by sharing photographs of her wearing Knicks gear over the years. The backlash grew as fans accused McNutt of wrongly questioning Swift’s fandom.
McNutt addressed the criticism the following day in an interview with TMZ Sports, admitting she had been mistaken. She explained that she had not seen Swift at Knicks games and was familiar with other celebrities who regularly supported the team.
However, the incident was unfolding against the backdrop of one of the biggest games in Knicks history. New York had entered Game 4 leading the Finals 2-1 and was down by as many as 29 points against San Antonio. The team completed a historic comeback to win 107-106, with OG Anunoby tipping in with 1.2 seconds left.
Reflecting on the moment on The Pivot, McNutt said she was focused on the game rather than the online reaction. She recalled being told she was going viral while rushing toward the court after Anunoby’s decisive tip-in.
“I do not care. Did you just see that?” she remembered saying. “And so I think for me, occupational hazard,” she added.
She argued that people unfamiliar with the job may not understand how hot microphones capture private comments.
“People that have never had our job, you don’t know how hot mic works. And if you don’t speak with any of the flavor that I speak with, you probably took that comment to heart, and it wasn’t even that deep,” she added.
She also said “get out of here, girl” was “colloquial” rather than a literal demand for Swift to leave.
The NBA Finals MVP, Brunson, later helped calm the situation. McNutt recalled how, after the Knicks won the championship following Game 5, Brunson took her microphone and addressed Swift’s fans directly.
“She’s a really good one. Cut her some slack. It’s all good, I promise,” Brunson had said.
Addressing that moment, McNutt said, “Jalen is just so thoughtful. He’s an incredible leader… Tip of the cap to him for sure.”
McNutt made it clear that she never intended to offend Swift, viewing the remark as a throwaway comment that spiraled due to the hot mic and the online reaction.
While the backlash brought unwanted attention, Brunson’s public defense offered a lighter ending to the controversy.
