Tim David named for Tasmania in push for 2027 ODI World Cup spot

The 30-year-old T20 star returns to 50-over domestic cricket after three years away, with coach Jeff Vaughan confirming his bid to feature in Australia's squad for the World Cup in South Africa.

Tim David has been named for Tasmania's upcoming 50-over domestic matches as the 30-year-old T20 star pursues a place in Australia's 2027 ODI World Cup squad for South Africa. The move marks a significant return to List A cricket for David, who has not played a 50-over match since filling in for injured Glenn Maxwell during a bilateral series in South Africa ahead of the 2023 World Cup, when he made four ODI appearances.

Tasmania coach Jeff Vaughan confirmed the development on Friday, explaining the alignment between David's franchise commitments and the domestic schedule. Vaughan stated that David has been eager to pursue this opportunity for some time, and the timing now allows him to balance his international league obligations with domestic cricket in Australia.

"Pretty exciting, isn't it. It's something that's been spoken about the last few years, it's just been a case of at what stage could it align with his schedule and the playing schedule," said Vaughan as quoted by Cricinfo.

Why is David returning to 50-over domestic cricket?

David's return to domestic 50-over cricket comes at a time when Australia's ODI side has faced challenges in the middle order. The team has lacked finishing power following Glenn Maxwell's retirement and has been exposed in that area across the last four ODI series this year, including a recent series loss to South Africa. The 2027 World Cup in South Africa presents an opportunity for David to establish himself in the format and make a case for selection.

"But undoubtedly, there's another part of that with a 50-over World Cup around the corner. He wants to make himself available for that. He wants to keep playing in this format, learn it, be good at it, and then make it possible for the Australians to select him in that format as well. So yeah, he's looking forward to it," Vaughan said.

David has not held a state contract since his early days as a rookie in Western Australia before he began playing for Singapore. He remains uncontracted with Cricket Australia, which has allowed him to pursue opportunities in domestic T20 leagues around the world and skip bilateral ODI series. He lives in Perth when not playing overseas and has not played any cricket since the European T20 Premier League in mid-September.

What role will David play for Tasmania?

Vaughan outlined his expectations for David's batting approach in the 50-over format. The coach confirmed that David would bat in the middle order, with flexibility to adjust his position depending on match circumstances. Vaughan explained the tactical approach for deploying the batter.

"We'll probably name him around six, and then depending on how the innings goes, we might slide him up, and we'll get him into the action," Vaughan said.

Vaughan noted that David's role in the closing overs of a 50-over match would mirror his T20 responsibilities, with approximately 15 overs remaining in the innings. The coach elaborated on the timing and approach for David's involvement.

"Batting at No. 6, we won't want him walking to the wicket too early and before the 25-over mark. But if we can sort of inject him around 30-plus overs, it'd be great. I think he'd play very similarly to how he does in a T20 match. There'll only be four overs out of him until the 40th over. So I think that'll be a pleasant surprise for him as well," said Vaughan.

David's List A record before this return

Tasmania's match against Queensland is scheduled for Monday, November 16. Australia's ODI series against England takes place on November 13, 15 and 18, while the five-match T20I series against England begins on November 21. David would receive a call-up to the ODI side only if he is selected for the England series.

Vaughan suggested that David's involvement with Tasmania would extend beyond a single appearance. The coach indicated that scheduling conversations were ongoing to accommodate David's availability alongside his franchise commitments and potential Australian white-ball fixtures.

"But I think they might coincide with some Australian white-ball [games] as well. So, look, the conversation is play tomorrow and then hopefully the Brisbane game for us. We've also got a couple of games post the BBL that certainly we've spoken about. If it aligns with his schedule it'd be great. If not, we're happy to support him where and how we can," Vaughan said.

David's List A experience has been limited before this return. He played one 50-over match for Tasmania in November 2021, which came after an impressive England One-Day Cup tournament for Surrey, when he made two centuries and an unbeaten 52 across eight innings. His only other List A cricket came in five Associate matches for Singapore in 2019.
