ATP player Jesper de Jong has confirmed that he will undergo surgery that will keep him sidelined for six months.
The current world number 102 has issued the update on his social media, having been struggling with an Achilles injury for some time. De Jong recently played at the US Open, where he was beaten by Zizou Bergs in the second round. The Dutchman enjoyed his career-best Grand Slam finish earlier this year at the French Open, reaching the fourth round as a qualifier before losing to eventual champion Alexander Zverev.
But De Jong will be out of action for some time given that he will undergo surgery on his longstanding Achilles problem next month. The former world number 71 ends his season with an 8/15 win/loss record, while he has yet to claim an ATP title in his career.
Sharing the unfortunate update on his Instagram story, De Jong wrote: “Hi everyone, I want to give an injury update, as not many of you may know I’ve been struggling with pain in my heel/Achilles since the first match of the season.
“Some days were better than others, and I was able to play a lot of matches on adrenaline or without pain at all. But from August onwards, it got worse and you could see a big bump on my heel, which was bothering me a lot. So it was time to find out what was wrong.
“After examination, it was shown that there’s an extra piece of bone that is pinching my Achilles tendon, which has a vertical tear in it. Unfortunately, that tear won’t heal as long as the bone is like this. So I’ve made the difficult decision to undergo surgery mid-November and make my comeback once I’m eligible for a protected ranking, which will be at the start of April.”
Of course, injuries are part and parcel of any sport, and tennis is certainly no exception. But hopefully De Jong can make a speedy recovery and return to full fitness. He can certainly lean on the experience of his ATP rival Holger Rune, who has just returned from an Achilles injury. The Dane just claimed his first ATP win in 11 months at the Basel Open.
The Dutchman certainly isn’t the only player to call time on their 2026 campaign at this stage. World number one Jannik Sinner has ended his season because of a knee injury, and he has been joined by Jack Draper. Meanwhile, WTA star Iga Swiatek has ended her 2026 campaign, as has Amanda Anisimova.
