How David Beckham can help Nottingham Forest stars in search for goals

Nottingham Forest host Arsenal at the City Ground in a big Premier League clash this afternoon

Nottingham Forest's Liam Delap shoots at goal during the Premier League match against Crystal Palace

Head coach Oliver Glasner could turn to David Beckham for inspiration to help his misfiring Nottingham Forest stars.

Missed chances cost the Reds against Crystal Palace last time out as they fell to a second successive defeat in the capital. Glasner's side created a glut of opportunities but failed to take advantage of them as they were beaten 3-1.

Glasner doesn't want their struggles in front of goal to play on the minds of his players. He is of the view that failure comes with the territory for sportspeople, it is simply a matter of how you deal with it, citing Beckham's last-minute free-kick for England against Greece at Old Trafford that clinched qualification for the 2022 World Cup.

Forest striker Liam Delap was guilty of a particularly big miss at Selhurst Park. But the 23-year-old has responded well this week.

Make sure you never miss the latest Nottingham Forest news and opinion by making the Nottingham Post one of your Google preferred sources.

“I don’t know if it was the missed chance, but on Wednesday we had training with small-sided games and he missed some chances," Glasner said ahead of this afternoon's clash with Arsenal at the City Ground (4.30pm kick-off). "He got frustrated, he kicked the (water) bottle!

“But this is sometimes what you need. You have to deal with it. You don’t always want someone to talk to you and explain. Sometimes you need to let the frustration out and leave it alone.

“But on Friday he had a big smile and it was completely the opposite - he scored plenty of goals. We trust him 100 per cent. We trust all our attackers that they are able to score goals. I think that’s the best thing to know. It’s like parents and their children - if you’re always criticising them, then they never get confidence.

“The best sportsmen in the world - and I try to look outside of football as well, like Kobe Bryant and Roger Federer - they see failure as part of the process. It’s how you deal with it.

“Missing chances happens all the time. Just look at the qualification for the World Cup at Old Trafford when England needed a goal and David Beckham scored from a free-kick.

“The crowd were already booing as he had missed and missed and missed. But he had the guts in the 91st minute to say: ‘Hey, I missed and missed.’ And then saying: ‘Go away, I’ll take the free-kick.'

“And then he scored it and England qualified. I get goosebumps when I am talking about it, because this is personality.

“This is what you need. This is what the top players have, never losing confidence in themselves.

“Someone like Beckham may not have had it when he was 20 or 21, but he then grew into the role. It came with experiences.

“If you then do it, the next time no-one will boo again because you have proven it and shown it. That’s where superstars are made - at the right moments, I believe in myself and I will do it."

On whether his squad have that mentality, Glasner added: “It’s a process and everyone is different. Maybe I’ll try to find the David Beckham video and show it.

“I played padel last week and had a huge defeat. I played this week as well and it was much better. This is normal.

“No-one cares if I lose a game of padel, just me. But if Forest lose a game, thousands of Forest fans have their opinion about it and so you have a much higher responsibility. It’s not so easy to deal with this sometimes when you’re a young person. That’s why my approach is to help them, as long as we see maximum effort - and I think that’s what we could see.”
