Wang Wei-hsuan makes it second time lucky in Macau, beats Im Sung-jae to claim Open crown

Taiwan golfer gets better of South Korean rival in play-off, exactly a year after losing a sudden-death showdown at Macau Golf and Country Club

Wang Wei-hsuan made sure lightning did not strike twice at the SJM Macau Open, winning in a play-off almost a year after a sudden death shoot-out shattered his hopes of taking the title.

Just 364 days after a heartbreaking loss to Germany’s Dominic Foos, the Taiwanese golfer got the better of South Korea’s Im Sung-jae in a final-round battle that went right down to the 72nd hole and beyond.

Trailing by a shot heading down the par-5 18th at Macau Golf and Country Club, Wang chipped in for an eagle to move ahead, only for his rival to grab a birdie, and their matching three-under-par 67s left them tied on 17 under overall.

But unlike last year, Wang would not be denied and he birdied the 18th moments later to win his first Asian Tour title.

“After I chipped in on the 18th and then went to the scoring and then came back for the play-off, I could only think of last year. I’m very happy that I could get the job this time and win, and I’m really happy that I could do it in front of my wife and family,” Wang, who dedicated the win to his mother, said.

While Wang and Im were battling back and forth in the day’s last pairing, Charles Porter was having the sort of day that often ends with a trophy.

The 2.06m (6ft 9in) American, who has been battling illness all week, powered his way to a nine-under 61 that ultimately left him alone in third place on 14 under, one ahead of compatriot Austen Truslow.

China’s Wu Ashun and Thailand’s Danthai Boonma recorded identical scores of 65 to tie for fifth place on 12 under.

“It was completely out of nowhere,” Porter said. “Physically and mentally, this week has been a complete grind, and I felt terrible, to be honest. My body’s felt horrible. So, to shoot 61 out of nowhere and make a couple chip-ins in the first five holes was unexpected, but that’s how golf is sometimes.”

Elsewhere, Yin Ruoning celebrated back-to-back LPGA Tour titles with a thrilling one-stroke victory in Shanghai.

The home hero carded a final-round four-under 68 at Sheshan Golf Club to emerge victorious from a showdown with overnight leader Choi Hye-jin.

The 24-year-old Yin, winner at the FM Championship in Boston in August on her previous start on tour, finished on 11 under, one shot clear of her rival.

It was Yin’s seventh LPGA title and her second in Shanghai, having won the event in 2024.

“I think this tournament means everything to me because you have the chance to play in front of all your family and friends and in front of all the amazing fans,” she said. “It’s just amazing.

“I mean, I still have emotions, but this time very calm, more calm than FM,” she said, comparing her understated celebration this time with her jubilant win two months ago.

“I think it’s a dream come true to win at home, and I think I’m lucky to win it twice. I hope this is just the beginning.”

South Korea’s Amy Yang was third on eight-under, with Japan’s Rio Takeda another shot back.
